Groupon Getaway to Europe for Honeymoon?

Alicia, on January 16, 2015 at 12:07 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8

Has anyone used a Groupon getaway? How was the experience?

I currently have Sandals in Jamaica reserved. But a part of me wants to do something different than beach and Europe would be amazing. They have good deals on Groupon and the hotels in the packages seem to be great hotels from various reviews. Is this a good option? I doubt we could afford Europe booking everything seperately so this is why I'm considering this option.

Your honeymoon is one of the most important and usually the most expensive trip you will take in your lifetime. It will be a memory that can never be redone. While saving a bunch of money and getting a deal sounds like a great idea it can turn what should have been a dream honeymoon into a nightmare. Travel discount sites will get the rooms that are hard to sell and then they offer them a huge discounts promising travelers a centrally located room near all the amazing local attractions, when in reality that centrally located room is 5 miles outside of town and will take a taxi ride to get to any of the attraction.

Instead of risking your dream honeymoon with an online discount site find a trust travel agent and let them handle all the details to make your honeymoon go off without a hitch. A good agent won’t cost more than doing it on your, and can in fact save you money and hours of frustration! But just like any industry, there are great agents, and not so great agents. Here’s some questions to ask when looking for an agent:

    - How long have they been in business?

    - What professional certifications do they hold?

    - Are they able to articulate why they are recommended a certain destination or resort for you?

    - Are they able to explain all the ins and outs of the trip insurance?

    - When is the last time they visited the particular resort or destination they are recommending?

Lastly go with your gut, as silly as that advice may sound. So many variables are left unanswered by a website, with a great travel agent they are a quick email or phone call away and you don't have to worry about sacrificing quality for price.

Usually those Groupons must be used during certain dates and usually they are not dates that are far out. We just did Paris in September for 9 days for under $5,000 US. But that only included one of our flights, not both. FH was already there for a business trip and I met him out there. But that included my flight, our hotel for 8 nights, all activities, food and spending money. So if you need a recommendation for things in Paris, let me know. I liked our hotel a lot and I have a LOT of money saving tips. But I only know from Paris itself. Not going to other countries.

I tend to disagree with other posters. Although some look at your honeymoon as the dream trip/most expensive trip I look at it opposite. Although I wanted to go to St. Lucia initially I didn't want to stay in a standard room, I wanted upgrades. When we were already paying for everything else (wedding) the same time as the honeymoon I didn't want to shell out $8,000 for the room I wanted. FH and I decided on going to an all inclusive resort in mexcio that is brand new and flying first class. We got an upgraded room and the trip is around $4500.00 I wouldn't call that the most expensive trip we will ever go on. My 'dream trip' would be Tahiti and one day we will go, but to me I couldn't see spending the $10,000+ on going to Tahiti during the same time we are paying for the wedding. We are also at the age where we are saving to purchase our first home, so I would rather have these events and start putting money back in the bank and saving for a big trip that will get you excited again and something to look forward to. I think you have to do what is best for you and if they have a groupon that fits your timeframe when you can go check it out.

I booked my honeymoon through Groupon but the deal itself is from a travel agency so it's not like there wouldn't be somebody to back me up if there is a problem. I looked up the company and they have great reviews and so does the resort. Also, the company allows me to customize the trip with a bunch of add ons and upgrades. We paid $2200 for a week at an all inclusive resort in Punta Cana with airfare on a direct flight with no stops/layovers. I definitely wouldn't listen to somebody who views Groupon Getaways as their competition (above)

I've never used Groupon, so I don't have much advice there. But do go to Europe! Everytime I've gone, I have had the absolute best time! For instance, Spain = AMAZING! Smiley smile

If you look at the date and read the fine print a Groupon vacation is perfectly fine. I saw one on either Groupon or Living Social this week to Iceland for under $3000....how can you beat that?

When it comes to your honeymoon I would not recommend Groupon. You get what you pay for and just cause its on sale does not mean its the best option.

Just make sure you read the fine print!! Groupon usually has lots of conditions listed in the fine print... so if it works for you, I don't see why not.
