Growing your own flowers?

M., on January 22, 2021 at 1:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

Hello, hello! Smiley heart

I'm attempting to grow my own flowers for my wedding this summer (early July) and have been freaking out/excited on and off since I made the decision lol. I'm just curious if anyone else is trying to do this as well?! If anyone has done it - how did it go?

I've been reading blogs and watching as many videos as I can and I plan on trying to take some arranging classes if I can find some being held the spring/summer. I know this is a risky move, but I just can't help wanting to be able to boast about this for the rest of my life if I somehow pull it off 😂. Worst case I end up with a lush home garden this year haha

As backup, I'm fully ready to source stems from a nearby flower farm, a flower market, and/or ordering online from Sams/fiftyflowers/etc.

I know I'm annoying my fiancé constantly talking about flowers but I can't help it 🙈😅

I wouldn't do it, especially if you or anyone else has pollen allergies. Your best bet for fresh flowers is fiftyflowers.com which is the cheapest price you will find (even less $ than silks) which are the same flowers that will be sold to a professional florist without the pollen that triggers allergies. Also it's less work and stress for you because time and sanity equal money. Just bundle flowers and go instead of months of gardening on top of that which includes the stress that goes with it.

I think that's interesting! especially if you're super into gardening. however definitely have a contingency plan in case those flowers don't grow the way you hope.

I'm not trying to decide to grow them or not, I am doing it. It's a pet project not a far-flung budgeting attempt 🥰

I'm just trying to find some comradery and/or other enthusiastic gardeners 🌱🌼💕

That sounds interesting! I've never heard of anyone doing that before for their wedding! I hope it works out for you because it would be a great story to tell when people ask about your florals!

Thanks! ☺️ and yeah I definitely have like 3 contingency plans set up so if I'm getting close and in dire need I can get everything taken care of 😅

Theres a medium sized local flower farm about 30 mins from my house that I've been in contact with, so the woman that owns it is aware of the plan lol. She's who I'm going to primarily use for supplementing whatever I am able to grow. I'm going to probably order some type of eucalyptus online though. Who knows! I think it'll be fun and I'm excited to see how everything pans out

Thanks! Yeah I've been struggling to find any good experience stories of people doing this 😅 Like I know people have done it before but I'm just so curious as to how?! I'm trying to document the process for myself so if it does end up working I can have something to post for anyone else to reference lol

The only people I know who attempted something similar were people who planted a zillion bulbs with plans to use them for their wedding.... It was a particularly warm early spring and they all bloomed about three weeks before the wedding.... If you're an experienced gardener, hopefully, it will work out better!

I think this is going to be a really special addition to your wedding—even if you only end up with a few flowers. Good for you💐

    Thank you! 😝🍀

And oh gosh 😅 so much 🙈 I’m growing a bunch of different things because as much research as I’ve done I still don’t want to gamble on one type. But I’m starting everything from seed/tuber but I’ll probably end up buying some plants later on too.
Right now I have zinnias, cosmos, dahlias (container and mostly dwarf so maaaaaybe they’ll bloom in time), sweet peas, poppies, a ton of filler, and family members have hydrangeas we can use 😅 I’m going to end up ordering some garden roses online. Fingers crossed something will work 😂

Omg such a good idea!!! Do you have a home greenhouse? Where do you live? I'd love to try something like this, especially because my fiance has plenty knowledge about growing stuff 😊

Awesome! I definitely recommend started with a couple plants that have already flowered too! Hydrangeas are great, especially if you dry them out at their peak of color - they hold their structure very well. Good luck!

We do have a small greenhouse, thankfully! We’re about an hour outside of Columbus, OH. I think I’ll be able to get stuff fully transferred outside by mid/late April 🌱

Your fiancé seems like a great resource! I love the idea of having at least a few flowers in my own bouquet that have been sourced from our homes garden 🥰
You’ll have to let me know if you all grow anything for your wedding! ☺️ I think it’s a fun passion project but definitely something I want backup plans/supplement plans in place for 🌼😝

I am currently attempting to grow anemones and ranunculus for the first time. If it goes well, I'm hoping to convince my florist to add some to the bouquets at my June 2021 wedding 🤞

Yay! That’s so exciting!! ☺️ I love both of those flowers! Good luck!! I’m sure your florist would willing to add a few home grown flowers into your bouquet, it’s such a special, personal touch to your big day 🥰 what colors are you growing?

I am growing Floret's anemone pastel mix (white, pink, purple) and their ranunculus champagne mix (coral, apricot, salmon, raspberry). Excited to see if I actually get all of those colors!

Oh my gosh I’m so excited for you! 😍 I LOVE Floret’s catalogue, I have a few of her seed packets for my attempt 😊 Both are going to be beautiful, but that ranunculus mix is gorgeous!! 🥰
