Guest Photo Collecting

Kendra, on June 18, 2021 at 11:24 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 2 17

I want to post a sign at the reception to encourage my guests to take their own photos and to upload them to ONE spot and how to do so, so we can view them all afterwards. I am DUMB when it comes to this stuff. Any advice or exact directions on where to find this and how to do it? I quickly read online on how to do it, but it overwhelmed me. Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

I don't have experience with one spot for everyone to upload it, but I've always seen signs telling guests to use the wedding hashtag so they can find it on social media. You could create a Google Voice account and have guests send the photos to that alternate number? That way your personal phone# isn't out in the open, but you get all of the photos sent to you under one phone#?

You could create a Google Drive folder and ask everyone to upload their images there! Send out the link ahead of time or have signs with the link on it at the wedding. There is also an app called The Guest that's supposed to be useful for getting photos from guests, though I have never used it, so I don't have any feedback on it, but it could be worth looking into.

I think this is mainly why people use hashtags - that’s probably the easiest way to find all your photos and the least cumbersome on your guests.

I used the Guest app. It was super easy to set up and use. Your guests just take pictures/video as usual with their phone’s camera and it uploads automatically. The app also creates a flier for you to print out with the event code on it. It also uploads in real time so people that can’t make it can also join the event and see things as they’re happening.
I used it for both my shower and reception and it worked great!

This sounds really helpful! Was it the WeddingWire guest app? (I see The Knot has one too.) Did guests have to take their photos directly through the app or was the app somehow linked to their camera roll? How many guests would you say actually used it?

Not sure if everyone has iPhones or not. I can’t imagine it’s iPhone only.

It was through a the Knot. We had 60 guests total and I wanna say 10 people used it. We got around 500 pictures and video but some were duplicates where one guest saved another guest’s photo they took.
They just take pictures through their normal camera like they normally would. They have to give the app access to their camera or camera roll. When you set up the event you specify the time frame that it will access photos. I did just after the ceremony until when the reception was scheduled to end.

There used to be an app called WedPic, not sure if it's still around but it worked well for my friends wedding. She had the information in a little photo frame on each table.

We have a digital picture frame (PixStar brand off of Amazon). It connected to WiFi and you set up its own email address. We made a sign with the email address and are asking guests to text/ email their pictures to us there. We will have the frame set up at the reception, so people can see their pictures pop up real time.

We used The Guest which is a free app designed by The Knot. It was really easy to use. Guests join your event and then all photos taken within a time you specify at a location you specify will automatically be uploaded. Only other people in your event are able to see the photos, and you get to approve anyone asking to join your event so there are no secret lurkers. Guests can also manually select photos to add if they don't feel comfortable with the auto upload option, and guests can also add photos via a computer if they don't have a smartphone or want to add photos taken with a different camera. While not perfect, I found it to be a pretty flexible and user friendly platform.

Our wedding celebration was last weekend and our venue had spotty cell reception and no wifi, so we ended up getting a bunch of shots from our guests within a day or two following our event. Once we get some photos from our photographer, I will likely email guests with those photos and a reminder for them to add photos to The Guest app.

We also used a wedding hashtag (and made our event code for The Guest the same thing for simplicity sake) but I'm only on Instagram and my husband just has Facebook and Instagram so we aren't big social media users. I haven't seen anyone add photos from our wedding to Instagram using our hashtag at all, and my husband says one guest added photos to Facebook, but seven of our 47 guests have uploaded photos to The Guest. I was still expecting to see some more, but I expect we'll get a few late additions once I send the reminder email out.

For a free app, I think it works really well. You are never going to get total participation from all your guests, but its a great "one spot" place to collect photos, and it will also collect video as well, which was cool for us because we didn't have a videographer at all. You can download all of the full resolution files after the fact really easily.

Thank you Kari, I did download the wedding wire for guests app. Seems fairly simple, but the Guest app seems pretty good too. Yet all these instructions make me dizzy. I'm trying to get my daughter to be in charge of this, but not sure how that's working! Thanks to everyone for your input!

With The Guest, setting up the event takes a few minutes but once you do that it is fairly straightforward. We sent the event link to our guests via email, and then also had table tents with very basic instructions "download 'The Guest' app and use event code #####."

I haven't heard from anyone that they had trouble with the app at all, but we're millennials as was most of our guest list, so smartphone apps tend to be more intuitive to younger generations than older crowds. Our parents (in their 70s) were a bit confused by it but my mom can't even figure out how to send a text message so her being able to just take some photos on her new iPhone was a feat.

An announcement from the dj will be more effective than any signage. Make sure the app is accessible for both iPhone and android users. A hashtag will make putting everything in one spot.
