Guest Photo Sharing

Maria, on February 26, 2019 at 11:32 AM Posted in Community Conversations 1 21
I was planning on using a hashtag to collect our guest's photos but honestly wasn't sure how effective it would be with our crowd. Have any of you seen the app "The Guest" that the Knot has been promoting (it's free)? I'm not sure if many people would actually download the app and I don't like the idea of bugging them ahead of time to do so. The app recommends sharing guests' phone or email so that they can be reminded to download prior to the event.
Has anyone had success with either option or something else to collect all photos? If you aren't married yet, what do you plan to use?

We did a hashtag and to be honest only 3 people out of 225 posted using the hashtag... even after the wedding I asked people if anyone took any pics...another 3 people sent us some. Not sure why people aren't more willing to share their photos.... I'm glad that we had a photobooth really was surprised how many people took pics, or we would have no guest pictures since our photographer only got people dancing on the dance floor. If it's free I say try it! Use a hashtag and this as well... doesnt hurt! Good luck

The only problem I have with this app is the auto-sharing. I'm not sure how many people would be comfortable with every single picture they take during the wedding (while auto-sharing is on) getting uploaded to the app.

Thanks for your input Jesalina! I feel like I would be in the same boat...a few people I specifically asked might actually use the hashtag.

I agree. I thought about having signs or info on our program with a note *All photos taken between X and X time will be automatically shared to this photo album.* but IDK if that's enough for people to know what they are getting into.

I thought about asking some of the photo-happy guests to use it specifically but they would probably be happy to share pics if I asked.

The auto share is very easy to turn off and the app was very clear about it — all of my guests turned it off. I think I did warn people about it though.

we used it (when it was still called “Veri”) and I was really happy about it. I told a few friends/bridal party/immediately about it (invited them directly) and otherwise just mentioned it on my website and on the info I included in hotel welcome bags. I think about 34 (out of 125 guests) “contributed” - and the people that did added them manually after the fact instead of auto-uploading. We got almost 700 pics and videos through there, and it was SO much fun watching them trickle in over the couple days after the wedding. It also provided a sharable link, so anyone could see them, which was cool. I was really happy with how it went. My guests got some awesome pics and I got to see them ASAP! I wasn’t pushy about it and just sort of spread the word slightly and then left it be, so I didn’t know how it would turn out, but also figured there was nothing to lose!

Thank you so much for sharing your first hand experience!
This makes me think about using the app a little more than I did before. I just wasn't sure how it would be received by our guests.
Great idea to include the info on your website and welcome bags!

Wow, that's awesome Mcskipper! Did you have to remind anyone to upload their photos after the fact?

Also, did you have an unplugged ceremony or let guests take photos? I wasn't sure if these kinds of apps would almost encourage guests to take photos during the ceremony and I would like to avoid that.

I didn’t remind anyone to upload or mention it to anyone after the fact except for sharing the link . It kinda seemed like it was up some peoples’ alleys, while some didn’t care at all, hah. There were definitely some people that took pics that shared them on FB but not on the app, but I wasn’t about to chase them down and make them use the app too...if I wanted them all in the same place, I could’ve (and maybe should haha now that it’s occurring to me) saved their pics of FB and uploaded them to the app myself. But mostly the people that wanted to participate just took the time to sort through and post the good ones and maybe do some editing before adding them— which is good actually, so we didn’t end up with 20 blurry versions of the same pic (which could’ve been a problem if people actually auto shared!) ....from the user side it is really simple to go through and upload your chosen pics after the fact.

it kind of felt like some people got SUPER into playing photog, and some people just shared a few particularly good snaps (I’m including a screencap of the interface [of Veri, I’m not sure if the updated app functions exactly the same] where you can sort pics via contributor and you can see that people used it very differently haha! Some were ALL about it and posted a hundred, and others just thought one was super sharable).

we did NOT have an unplugged ceremony and do have tons of good ceremony pics (they were not in the photographers way/didn’t show up in any pro photos/didn’t seem preoccupied by phones)— coincidentally we had meant for the officiant to announce just a little something asking for people to be present right at the start of the ceremony (after processional) to discourage too much ‘phone in your face’ but, that blip in the script ended up getting missed, hah, and it was fine AND I was actually super happy to have some of their great pics (and videos of the ceremony, which was nice since we didn’t opt for a videographer), but I know lots of people don’t want that, haha!

I haven’t seen this but there’s a “walking” photo booth near me that I’m considering! You can upload pictures directly to social media or have a link sent, and from there you can see the pictures all in a gallery!

Hadn’t considered that as an option. Our venue has really spotty cell service so it wouldn’t work well anyway, I don’t think. Will probably ask guests to post photos to their FB pages and tag us and our hashtag, #PerfectMattch 😘

Thanks so much for the info! I definitely planned on scouring Facebook for guest photos but this seemed like an easy way to get a lot. I am the same way about not caring about a few non-in-your-face ceremony photos but it's tricky to allow some and not all.

I think one of their FAQ said that the photos won't auto-upload until wifi is available or you can turn off auto-upload and upload at a later time like other posters have mentioned. It's been interesting to hear what has worked for everyone though. Smiley smile

    Your hashtag is super cute!

    Love the play on names!
My FH's name is Austen so I thought of doing something with finding my perfect Aus10 if I did a hashtag 😜

I would be careful with that depending on your plans/expectations. I’ve seen brides who didn’t want a first look and go the traditional route, have friends who posted pics of her in the wedding dress before walking down the aisle and use the hashtag. Unfortunately, the groom and several guests saw what she looked like too soon.

What the heck kind of clueless IDIOTS would do that?! 😳

Probably the only ones who will see me before the ceremony will be our daughters, my bridesmaids, and my mother... none of whom are stupid or cruel to post photos first!!
