I really like the hay bale idea and we have been kicking it around for awhile, but I am not sure how our grandmothers would feel about trying to get up off of them, and my FH uncle has some health problems and may not to be able to get up off of them with out help plus hay bales have no back which would be needed for him. I thought about having 9 chairs just for the important people i.e. mom's, dad's, FH Grandparents (1 set), my 2 grandmothers, and his uncle; but I am not sure how to set up both chairs and hay bales. The only examples I have seen that used both put the chairs in the vary back, and obviously I wouldn't want them way in the back. Any ideas?

EDIT: April 4 2013 1:45am

They would be covered, and it ONLY be for the ceremony so like 30min max. We are having a short/sweet/and to the point wedding.

I think the straw bale (sorry, them being called hay bugs me. I guess it is the cowgirl in my :o). Hay is for eatting, straw is what you would use) looks adorable. I LOVE the idea of having them covered! I would get a few chairs for elderly though.

I think it's adorable and they look really nice covered. I would suggest testing it out on yourself first before submitting your guests to possible pokes in the butt. Also, I have a friend who is allergic to hay so for allergy purposes, it'd be a very good idea to have some chairs available.

This might sound a little out there, but I live on a farm and if you cover the bales in a tarp (like a clear plastic tarp) and THEN cover them in fabric, it significantly cuts down on the slight poking and the allergies to skin (straw dust is another thing) and the tarps are a cost, but still cheaper than chairs... just a suggestion

We are using a combo of both straw bales and chairs. Our venue is a farm, and they have some that we can use. We're going to turn them on the side (so they are a tad bit smaller) and then cover them with burlap and put some handmade burlap "throw pillows" on them in case someone needs the extra cushion. That will be the first 2 rows then after that we are using chairs for all the other rows and some chairs and the end of the first 2 rows. The chairs are for those who don't really want to sit on the straw and also for the older people who maybe can't get up and down from the straw bale. If I were you I'd use both, and def. cover the straw.

@Debbie K. - I'm with you there, it bugs me too seeing them called hay when it's really straw! :-)

I would just be concerned about allergies and the smell... maybe I'm weird but I HATE the smell of straw and it makes me sneezey and itchy. Maybe the tarp KissyBoopaDoop recommended would help that though?

    They're really cute though.

It's a great idea. That's whst I'm doing for my wedding. We're covering ours with those thick rustic quilts with different patterns on them. They will be comfortable and same as me. Quick sweet and to the point.
