Guest with multiple food allergies

I just found out I have a guest who cannot eat any of the food chosen for dinner. She has multiple food allergies that are very difficult to avoid. I emailed the catering company and hopefully they can cater to her needs. But what if they can't? What do I do then?



If anyone is curious she is allergic to corn, wheat, soy, shellfish, and red meat. Corn is the HARDEST thing to avoid which sounds crazy. But these are all things that fall under the corn category:

    Yikes! I've never dealt with this before and hopefully your caterer can accommodate to her needs. I feel like they should since it's just one person, and it should be simple to make her something separately and keep it separate from everyone else's meals!

    Also, never knew this much stuff fell under that category!

    When I think of corn I think of corn on the cob! But literally ERVERYTHING has corn in it in some way!

    Same haha!! Ugh, I see that and I hope you can get it figured out. I'm not sure what else you can do if the caterer can't accommodate to her needs. Maybe you could ask her what she CAN eat or what she would prefer to eat and you can get her that separately and have it boxed to the side? Would your venue/caterer allow outside food for her to be brought in?

    That is going to be my next step if they can't. I am going to see maybe if there is a restaurant I can get a meal from to deliver? Ugh idk but I have to get it figured out only 4 weeks!

    I think it's a good back up plan! Try to get as many options as you can in case one falls out!

    Is there any chance she's just allergic to straight up corn vs. all of these by-products? I've known a couple people that are allergic to fresh tomatoes but stuff like pasta sauce is fine (something about them being fresh vs. cooked).

    OOF that's rough. Then I'd def go with SHY's suggestions and ask her what she can eat or maybe your caterer has a vegan option that would work? I have a couple relatives with a lot of allergies and at restaurants they always ask for this big book that lists all the ingredients in every entrée - maybe your caterer would have one of those too?

    I will have to ask! Apparently some pesticides contain traces of corn so it has to be organic food too

    Since she is your guest, I would definitely talk to the chef and see what they can do for her. If that won't work, I would ask her what she's done at other weddings and parties. People with serious health conditions live with these kinds of choices every day -- they're used to either bringing their own food, eating before they go somewhere, or simply not attending.

    I have some food allergies and I always just assume that there won't be anything I can eat at events, so I always plan accordingly and never expect someone to have "special" food for me. I can't eat gluten but once attended a wedding where the only food was pasta! I have had well-meaning people in the past try to provide food that I can eat, but sometimes I still had to turn it down so I would honestly rather them not bother because there's no way for me to verify that the food *actually* doesn't contain certain things. honestly, if the catering company could provide just some chicken and plain veggies for her I'm sure she'd be more than happy but if I were in her shoes I certainly wouldn't expect it. I'm used to stashing snacks in my bag everywhere I go!

    I just talked to her more and she said if she can just get a nice big bowl of greens she will bring her special dressing she can use

    There a ton of things that can be made without those ingredients - chicken, rice, and veggies is one that is easy to prepare and comes to mind. Corn is in a lot of prepared food but if your caterer is using fresh ingredients its pretty easy to avoid.

    Don't freak out until you hear back from your caterer. They should be able to accommodate a special meal for that guest. I would not alter all of your hors d'oeuvres, desserts, etc to meet the dietary needs of that guest, but as long as they get a meal they will be fine.
