Guestbook "board" - which pens to use?

OctoberBride, on August 31, 2017 at 3:36 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 15

Hi all. I got this great dark-ish wooden board on Etsy for our guests to sign instead of a book. I had figured we would use white paint pens to write on it until it dawned on me that they would smear really badly when people are signing. Will silver or gold metallic sharpie markers show up on the dark wood? I know permanent markers wont smear... Has anyone done anything like this? If so, can you upload a pic?

Is the wooden board smooth? If so, those sharpies should be perfect. I love them, they are very pigmented.

I asked the seller and she said she would recommend paint pens but that I should tell people to be careful when signing...I don't trust people to be careful, lol!

Yep its a smooth board! It seems like there is some semi-shiny protective layer over the top.

@Sally Yeah, that's a good idea. Do you mean silver sharpie or did you find a white permanent marker that isn't a paint marker?

I found A white sharpie at a craft store it doesn't look like paint I like the gold better to be honest

ETA: I just looked and I guess our white is paint LOL I will not be using that one I did find a distressed white that was cool but it went on Clear and then dried white so it made it hard for me to see it I was afraid guests wouldn't see it and try again and we would end up with a mess!

I made my own wooden guest book and I tested out different pens on a separate board that I stained. Metallic sharpies worked better than paint pens because they dried instantly.

We are doing white paint pens on the same type of board and it actually dried fairly fast! We are using Sharpie brand.. tested it on the tester wood they sent us that is the same stain. Maybe try a different brand?

We are using fine point Sharpies for our "heart" drop (they are actually SW rebel symbols). I just got a whole pack of them at JoAnns with a coupon so people can pick their colors.

Elmers makes paint markers that I've been using to hand letter wooden signs. They're the best wood marker I've found! They write well and don't smear - only thing is you would need a few of them because they do run out/fade quickly. I tried sharpie brand paint markers and they bleed so I would definitely not suggest buying something like that.

Here's a link to the wood marker:

And here is a pic of something I've written with the makers thus far
