Hair and Make Up doubts

Anna, on May 29, 2019 at 11:39 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 9
Hi! Just venting a bit on here and looking for brides who are in the same situation. Who might have been able to find a solution.
My wedding is 15 months away and I started to look for HAMU artists thinking I’d get the first pick. After looking for a month now I’m feeling a bit down because every make up artist seems to only have “flashy” bridal make up photos on their websites. With photos of brides “before and after” where the girls don’t look like themselves at all (my biggest fear on my wedding day!)

I want to go for a more natural look with almost no eyeshadow but I do want airbrushed foundation as I heard, it looks more natural and lasts longer. My mom is actually a professional make up artist with over 20 years of experience. So I was hoping she could do my make up because she’s done it for many other occasions and I always love outcome. However , she’s concerned about timing and doing my hair on the wedding day. So that’s why I started researching local artists.
My wedding is in Savannah, GA, so the market is very limited with a handful of artists. They are also pretty pricey charging anywhere from $125 for just airbrushing foundation to $350 for bridal make up and hair. So you can imagine trials are not much cheaper.
I honestly haven’t found one I absolutely love yet and am afraid I’ll have to settle for the flashy make up.
Did any of you find yourself in similar situation? Is anyone thinking of doing their own make up?
My bridesmaids already told me up front they would rather do their own make up. My wedding is pretty modern and not traditional at all. And I know they do a great job with their own make up. However, that’s another reason why the artist quote me so high is because I don’t have enough people to get the “discount”.

Here’s a photo of the eyeshadow look I’m going for. The lip would be a bit bolder but over all pretty natural with no contouring.

Is your timing that tight, that your mom won't have time to do your own? I ask because that seems like the simplest solution. Since she's done it before, she should have a good idea of how long it will take. And since your BMs are going to be doing their own makeup, that should free up some time as well.

You can probably do it before or after you get your hair done, whichever time works better. I know you said your mom is concerned about the timing, but there's got to be a way to work it out. I guess I'm not seeing the big picture here. If I were in your shoes, I'd want mom, since she's a professional, she's done you before, and she knows what you like, what look you are going for. Plus she won't charge you an arm and a leg!

See if you can make that work. I would.

    Hi Cristy
Thanks for your input! She’s more worried about my hair and how long it might take after she does the make up. We have a brunch wedding so the ceremony will be either at 10:15 or 11 based on our caterers timing.
She can do hair but make up is her specialty , so I think she is a bit nervous about taking too long and making me late. That’s why I tried to find just a hair stylist , so that my mom can do just make up, but I haven’t had any luck finding one for reasonable price or one willing to come out to my venue for just hair (since it’s so early). Another issue is that my FH and I are paying for everything ourselves. So I tried to look for an artist who does both , since they tend to be cheaper.

Yes, I had trouble finding one person for both. Luckily, the makeup lady I found works with some hair ladies at her salon. So, I explained the kind of hairdo I was looking for, and she's going to pick the right hair person and bring her along.

Maybe your mom could do the makeup first? Like really early? Then you have the rest of the time to do your hair, no matter who ends up doing it.

Have you tried looking on Thumbtack for a hair person? I didn't even know what that was until a few weeks ago. But there seem to be a lot of vendors on there, a lot of them just starting out, or just haven't built up their business yet. They seem to be more reasonably priced, and not as busy as more well-known vendors. Maybe you can find a hair person there. I do hope it works out for you.

Don't settle for the flashy makeup! I also want natural makeup and found a great makeup artist in town. It took a lot of searching but I loved the result from the trial. My MUA also told me that she hears brides saying they want airbrush but she usually reserves airbrush for skin needing a lot of coverage. She said traditional makeup has gotten so good that she prefers it and says it lasts longer. I think if I was in your situation I would do my own makeup. I would not risk looking super made up and it sounds like you know what you're doing!

If it's in your budget, I suggest doing trials before booking. I did two trials (hair and makeup) before booking because the pictures online weren't enough for me. I just picked two of the highest reviewed women who were professional, had actual salons or studios, and had pictures similar to what I was looking for.

I’ve only seen ads about Thumbtack. I’ll definitely check it out!
    Thank you!

    Hi Caitlin,
I love your trial look, you look beautiful !
Thanks for the advice! I’m actually pretty good at doing my own make up especially if it doesn’t involve airbrushing. So if all fails I might just do my own and have my mom do my hair /help.

Could you have your mom do your make-up and hire a hairstylist instead to save time?

In my opinion hair is a lot harder to mess up than make-up, so I'd go with your mom if that's who you're most comfortable with.
