Hair and Makeup Artists - Which to Choose

C, on August 24, 2020 at 4:39 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 4

Hi everyone! I've posted a few questions about hair and makeup artists as I try to choose the ones that are best for my wedding. I really am having a tough time deciding so I made a pro and con list - but I still can't choose! Which would you all pick?

Option 1: Separate hair and makeup artist

Pros:

- Exactly the style I want (boho braided styles that are perfect and excellent natural-looking makeup)

- Makeup artist can do both airbrush and traditional makeup

Cons:

- Makeup artist is very expensive ($850 for myself (trial and day of) and 2 additional people day of only)

- Hair artist didn’t respond for two weeks when I asked for contract (but is super responsive now)

- Hair artist wants to know the number of services I need done by this November which is over a year out from my wedding. She needs this in case she needs to get an associate stylist (I haven’t even asked bridesmaids yet and I'm not sure I can have a set number of services pinned down by then)

- If bridesmaids want hair and makeup done it would be $200 per person ($100 for hair and $100 for makeup)

Option 2: Company that does both hair and makeup

Pros:

- Doesn’t need my final numbers until 10 weeks before the wedding (which takes the stress out of asking my bridesmaids too early – COVID will play a lot into how many I ask – if we have to cut our guest list to 75 it’s basically just family)

- Services are cheaper and bridesmaids would pay between $140-180 dollars depending on what services they choose (full updo and full makeup is $180, but they can also choose options like eye makeup only, blow dry style, etc. for $70 a service)

Cons:

- I like their portfolio but I’m not in love since I don’t see many pictures with the kinds of hairstyles I love (boho braided updos - the associate in charge of booking has assured me that my style matches theirs though when I sent her my inspiration photos)

- Only offers traditional makeup (which I’m okay with since traditional is all I’ve ever worn)

I would personally choose the option that is best for YOU. $850 for a trial, your hair, and 2 other people's hair is actually a pretty decent price. You'd just want to make sure that 2 other people will definitely want their hair done.

It sounds like you're having hair and makeup for the bridesmaids be optional, so I wouldn't worry about cost in that respect since it would be their choice to get the services done or not. It's a tough call--I'd be hesitant to book with someone if I wasn't confident that their portfolio matched what I envisioned, but the November deadline is odd. Maybe you can ask if this November date can be extended a bit?

Seems strange the separate vendors need a final number a year out. Is that the only vendor combo available on your day? Have you checked Thumbtack.com if the WW vendor tab doesn't have anyone open?

I would be hesitant with the second company based on the fact they have a limited portfolio. That could account for their lower prices too. Would they even be able to what you and your bridesmaids want?

I struggled with this big time too! Definitely choose what the best option for YOU is!

I went with the “I’m only doing this once” mindset, so I chose two different artists, which ended up being more expensive - but I’m getting exactly the hair and exactly the makeup I want.
Side tip: both artists I hired worked for bigger “wedding hair and makeup companies” but they are so much less expensive when you hire them on their own. Lots of time on Instagram!

Can you do a hair trial before signing with the company that offers both, to make sure you are going to get exactly what you want?
A year before the wedding is SUPER early to have any kind of idea how many people will want services, even if you asked your BP tomorrow most probably will have no idea a year out if they want/will be able to afford hair and makeup. I would definitely ask about pushing the deadline back, though I do understand a lot of vendors are getting booked up for 2021. Maybe they are trying to make sure they can provide what you need and not have to tell you close to your date that they can’t get an assistant 🤷‍♀️.Ultimately, only you can decide if you are comfortable enough getting what you want from the company and if it’s with the savings. You don’t want to look back at your pictures and hate how your hair or makeup turned out.
