Hair and makeup artists who suck

Emily, on June 1, 2019 at 9:41 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5
I had a hair and makeup test run last night that went really REALLY bad.. I know the hair stylist through the salon I go to, he gave me his card once and said he does up-do’s and can style for events. He always does a beautiful job on my hair so I messaged him about a hair trial for my wedding. He also told me his boyfriend does makeup, he’s a drag queen but also knows how to do makeup on females. I checked out his page and he really is an artist, he does beautiful work and although I couldn’t find any pics of females he’s done makeup on, I could tell that he knows how to tone it down and do a more subtle look. So last night they both came over, and it was a disaster..

My makeup was terrible - the contour, both eye looks, everything. I even visited him at his job at Sephora before the test run to buy stuff he thought we needed for the pallet I’m going for ($130 at Sephora). I had my phone out the whole time with a picture of the look I was going for and it looked nothing like it. My eye liner wings were ridiculous, he apologized for them and said it was because I didn’t have the right kind of liner. He wants to do another test run for free to get the look down but I have no confidence in him.

The hair wasn’t anything special either.. I had a pic up for him the whole time of what I wanted, mostly down with simple beach waves and a little braid in the back. It wasn’t even close. But here’s the tricky part - he’s holding my $300 hair extensions for ransom.. I bought these extensions a while back and needed them color matched so I dropped them off to him over a month ago to color match. He brought them last night for the test run but they were nowhere close to my color. So he took them with him when he left to color them again.

So I need to 1) figure out how to get my extensions back, I don’t even care if they’re the right color, I’ll take them somewhere else. And 2) figure out how to break the news that I don’t want either of them to do my hair and makeup for the wedding.

Oh, and the cherry on top- they both invited themselves to my reception last night when we were in the middle of talking about how rude my fiancé’s mom is for inviting extra people. I was on the spot, I said yes.. But I think once I break it off with them they’ll be smart enough to realize they can’t come to the reception..

Same advice as the last thread. Speak up and find someone else. I hope you find someone who makes you happy. A lot of what I read just seemed really nightmare-ish. I'm surprised the MUA is willing to try it again. I'd run because you seem to be really upset or stressed or both. You can either complain and basically turn everyone off from you or you can say, "I'm not satisfied, thank you for your time but I won't need your services at my wedding". Big girl pants. It's your day.

I know, you’re right. I appreciate your advice. I just gota get it over with and stop letting the anxiety weigh me down.

I totally get what you’re going through. My first hair/make up trial was truly horrible as well. It’s really hard and uncomfortable but you just have to stand up for yourself and say you weren’t satisfied with their services and begin looking elsewhere for the wedding day. It sucks; when you’re so excited for your trial and then you have that sinking feeling when you realize it’s no good and now not only do you have to start the hair/makeup search all over, but now you have to have an awkward conversation. But it’s your wedding day and important to do that. And the good thing is it was just a trial, and you didn’t discover how horrible of a job they do...on your actual wedding day!!! Thank goodness for trials! 😊

Awkward. just a real pickle you have gotten yourself in. I'd be upfront that they didn't provide the wow factor. If they are offering to do it again for free i'd give them another shot if you don't want to burn bridges. Might be easier to get back your extensions this way as well.

OR just tell them your going to be getting services elsewhere, but get your extensions FIRST.

    Hi Emily Smiley smile

    Welcome to the WeddingWire community!

I'm really sorry to hear you were unhappy with your trials. This is why trials are so important in the process, at least now you can search for a hair stylist and makeup artists you love and can help you achieve your vision for your big day.

I hope you get everything resolved with the hair extensions and find some other fantastic artist Smiley smile
