Hair and makeup gratuity

Shelly, on January 22, 2021 at 8:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
So my wedding is next Friday. And a bridesmaid can’t make it anymore. I already paid for her hair and makeup. Would it be rude to include that money as gratuity? I don’t want to show up with a short tip. But there is a service I paid for that isn’t being done.

Yes because you would have still been paying that amount if the bridesmaid was able to make it.

Generally a tip is not given until after the service is performed. A tip for going above and beyond only would be paid in addition. You need to update them of the change and they will let you know how to go from there.

Personally I think that's fine, but maybe I'm stingy with tips. To me the cost of the service is the cost of the service.

I could go either way with this one. Are they independent artists or part of a company/salon? If independent, all of the money is going to them anyway, so I would say using that as a tip is fine. But if they work for a company, I would add on tip since the tip normally goes directly to them, while the cost of service goes to the company.

For me it would depend if that “extra” money was going directly to her. If it’s a fee paid to her employer, just be aware she will likely not receive the funds.

I know that tipping is technically for “above and beyond” but in the US at least, wages for service personnel are set with tips in mind. It’s everyone’s choice to tip or not of course.

Probably not. If you already paid, are you contractually required to pay for that service? And if so, was it part of a required minimum booking price/number of services? Because an extra person isn’t much extra time/materials, but HMUA charge prices and schedule the number of artists based on total price (bc they probably can’t schedule another wedding that day). So it will effectively be like not tipping at all... but that’s always a choice you can make.
