Hair and makeup help?

Katelyn, on September 29, 2019 at 6:36 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 4
Hello all! I am hoping I can get some guidance. To preface: I consider myself to be pretty talented at hair and have done all my hair for events in the past (I am pretty picky), but I have decided I really want to have my hair done for my wedding because I feel far to stressful to deal with that day and 2 I wanted to give my bridesmaids the option to have their hair done if they wished. My wedding is in June, and I am getting married roughly an hour away from where I live.

I found a hair and makeup who lives fairly close to the wedding venue. I’ve gone through her portfolio on social media and I LOVE her hair work, but she did not have much makeup pictures posted. $75 per bridesmaids I spoke with one of my bridesmaids and she seemed to think this price was really really high.
I found a second artist whose makeup work I really love, although I was not as impressed with their hair styling. Hair styling for this person was priced at $55; however, they are from my home town so there will be a travel charge.
My questions:
1. Is $75 considered to be too pricey for bridesmaids hair? (I’m not requiring they get hair done)
2. Did you use trials to decide on your artist? Or between artists? (This is where I really need help. I’ve heard you are supposed to do a trial 4 months in advance so that it is still recent in the memory . My wedding is a good while away, but I feel like I need do have my stylist booked before then. )

3. Did you do your trial before or after signing a contract/paid deposit?

4. If you did a trial to decide between artists, did you do another closer to your actual wedding date?

Hi! First of all, I'm super jealous that you can do your own hair for events and such. I can barely even be bothered to do a side part, lol!

I also ran into the same issue of really falling in love with either the hair or the makeup, but not both done by the same person. So I ended up booking one makeup artist, and am currently in the process of hiring a separate hair stylist.

    1. $75 is what I'm expecting to pay per bridesmaid as well.

    2. Personally, I'm not doing trials to help me decide. Based on portfolios and reviews, I'm pretty confident about the hair stylist and MUA. However, I will still be having trials done for both, just to make sure what I think I want is actually what I want and will look good! For my makeup in particular, we're doing the trial the day of my engagement photos.

    3. With the above in mind, the contract will be signed and deposit will be paid before I do my trials.

    4. n/a!

    1. I paid $140 for HAMU per bridesmaids and $240 for bridal HAMU so $75 for hair is super typical. Like you said, she doesn't have to pay the $75 if she doesn't want to.

    2. I did two trials before booking because I'm SO picky. I'm so happy I did, I thought I'd love the first girl then the trial was just "bleh". The second woman did the best job & I'm so happy with her.
    3. Before. I paid $100 for the first trial, $80 for the second. I booked with the second and paid a $100 deposit. I did another $80 trial closer to the wedding too.
    4. Yes, 1 month before.

    Hey Katelyn!

Since you are not requiring your BMs to pay to get their hair done, it’s totally fine that this is the cost. As long as you are happy with your hairstylist, then your BMs can make up their own minds whether they want to get theirs done or not.

As the pps mentioned, you can totally book trials to make your decision if that is what you want. You also don’t have to book the same stylist for your hair and makeup if you don’t want to. You can book one for your hair and another for your makeup if you choose.

What hairstyle are you planning on having for your wedding?

I don't think $75 is too much. My girls are paying $190 for hair and makeup. I'm paying $400 for hair and makeup. That includes the trial with it. I made sure to book my HMUA about 8 months in advance. They book up fast.

I am going next month for my hair trial but will not have time for a second one before the wedding. I did have to sign the contract first but I knew I wanted my HMUA. I think most will do a hair trial run for $80-$100 from what I've seen.
