Hair and makeup timing?

Grace, on June 1, 2021 at 11:18 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 5

Hi y'all!! My wedding is June 19th 2021 at 11am. I am getting my makeup professionally done, but decided to have a friend do my hair because we couldn't budget for both hair and makeup... I am not doing a makeup trial because I cannot afford to, but my friend and I will have multiple trial runs for my hair. I am wondering if I should get my hair or makeup done first and at what time before my 11am ceremony? I wanna make sure we have ample time for both the makeup and hair to leave room for any potential mistakes to be fixed...

Any input is appreciated! Smiley heart

I would get some quotes from makeup artists and explain your reasoning. I have heard of makeup artists thinking they were doing a trial only to realise it's the actual day - this is not ideal.

Most makeup artists budget 40 minutes to 1 hour for a bridal look, so if you're concerned, maybe give yourself 90 minutes, and explain this to whoever you pick to do your makeup.

My HMUA asked for 2 hours because I’m doing a whole lot of curls but a simple makeup look... So I think it depends on the type of hair and make up, their experience, and if you’re planning on getting pictures before the ceremony (first look, bridal portraits, getting ready, etc). Ask your makeup artist for an average time and add 30mins. Average the time you spend with your friend on hair and also add 30mins. Just based on experience, I would let the makeup artist go first. If everything goes according to plan, she’ll finish early or on time which gives your friend ample time to work on your hair.

I would start no later than 8 am for both hair and makeup. I would also choose to have my makeup done first and then do hair.

Hi Grace! I'd reach out to your MUA and ask how much time they'll need (probably 1-1.5 hours) and also figure out how much time you need for your hair based on your trials.

People tend to recommend doing your hair before your makeup, but it's up to you (either way is really fine)!

Your timeline will also depend on where you're getting ready (how far from your venue), if you're taking any pictures before the ceremony, and what time you need to be ready at your venue. Here's a great sample timeline you can check out as a baseline that was made for a 10am wedding: A Sample Morning Wedding Timeline for Your A.M. Celebration.

I would talk to your MUA. Mine said she budgets about 1 hour for the bride, and that's about what it took. I would do hair first, especially if you are planning on using any tools that use heat that way the makeup doesn't sweat off your face at all.
