Hair and mua - How Does This Work?

Jennifer, on July 22, 2019 at 1:49 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 24
So, I've booked all vendors besides hair and makeup. I did look around and get some quotes, but I don't understand how precisely this works. On one hand you want to book early with a deposit so you get who you want for your date and on the other hand how can you possibly know you want them without the trial? And, my understanding is that you want to wait until much closer to the wedding day for trials so the look us fresh in everyone's mind.

I've had a horrible experience with hair and MUA for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in a few years ago. Every bridesmaid hated their hair and the makeup...well, I could have done it myself and should have (I'm not even close to great with this stuff). I feel like many hair stylists make updos very tight and hard looking like your hair is now a shell, but I want messy and loose and romantic. How can you possibly book this/these vendor(s) without knowing what you're getting into first? And, I'm really not interested in multiple trials as that is a serious waste of money.

Pics attached are what I'm trying to accomplish just for reference. First is hair, the rest is makeup inspo. I'm in Philly, PA.

I used the MUA I plan on using for my engagement photos. That was my “trial” that helped me decide I wanted him for my wedding. As for my hair stylist, I actually used Instagram and the hashtag #mylocationweddinghair (or something along those lines). I found pictures that I liked and then would look at the artists’ pages to get a feel for their work. The lady I booked specializes in soft, romantic updos. Maybe try #phillyweddinghair or #phillyHMUA to see if you get the results you’re looking for.

Thank you!! I was wondering if I could find someone who specializes in this hair look. The makeup I am slightly less worried about because, TBH, it's a matter of technique and ability and anything can be fixed. But the hair is not my area and I feel like many hair stylists hear wedding hair and see hair helmets in their future. 😂 I will try your suggestion. I wish I had a trusty hair stylist, but I cut and color my own hair now for like 10+ years.

I had to just go on faith that they would make me look beautiful bc we planned the wedding from 700 miles away.
You should check out Daneene Jensen.

Theyre based out of Philly and did my hair and makeup and I definitely didn't feel like I had helmet hair and they're reasonably priced!
They post lots of their clients looks on instagram and all have a soft romantic look!

You've just got to trust them. Ask to see references of their past work before you book. Find them through Instagram so you can see tons of looks they've already done, or ask around for suggestions, maybe someone has a hairdresser that they know will knock it out of the park. And most of all, don't be afraid to tell them when you don't like something, It's your hair, and your money.

This was a risk I struggled with as well. I had narrowed it down to a few I liked and was going to use my shower, various parties, engagement photos, etc. to "Try out" each one and then decide. In the end though - I ended up booking with a salon where I knew and trusted my experience on a regular basis. So even though I didn't know the exact artist/stylists and their particular work, I knew that I had never had a bad experience in that salon and was comfortable paying my deposits. They also had the ability to accommodate my bridal party, moms and anyone else who wanted to book at the same time.

But definitely consider using other events as a "trial." If you trust the reviews and their portfolio, go ahead and book, but then have multiple trials if you have multiple events. Open up an open dialogue with them and you can decide and narrow down what you like and don't like and you won't feel like it was paying money for trials, but more like "Getting your hair and makeup done for such-and-such-event." you know?

I decided to go with someone who was recommended by my venue as affordable but also good. My trial is booked for a month before my wedding, so I am hoping if I hate it I have time to find someone else.

Yes, this is a good idea. The only event I have is engagement photos this September. I'd intended to do my own hair and makeup, though, as I am pretty low maintenance. But, it's definitely an option and one I was bouncing around for a little. Thank you!

Ask for photos of their past work and share photos of the style you're looking for. MUAh is very personal and you want to know what you're paying for. My wedding party and myself are doing our MUAH ourselves-- we know what works best for us and we're getting ready at different locations (I'm planning from across the country and some of us are staying with family; we're getting married in my hometown).

I found recommendations on a local wedding group on Facebook. I did some stalking to make sure she did the style I like then sent her a message and asked all the questions I had. For hair, I am using my regular hair stylist who knows what I like and I trust.

I would look for someone who has a strong social media/website presence. A lot of HMUA will post their work from previous weddings. I'm also in Philly and went with Make Me Glam. My friend recommended them. I haven't had my trial yet but they've been very responsive and helpful!

I would definitely look into previous work and reviews. You could always book a trial appointment early just so you are sure, I know it’s an extra expense if you do two but that way you know for sure.

I was MOH in a wedding last weekend. The bride hired a girl to do our hair. When she finished mine, I didn’t like it. I was honest about it and told her what I didn’t like about it and she fixed it to my liking.

In normal circumstances, this might have worked for the disaster I ended up with in my friend's wedding. However, she would have redid 6 girls. All of us just gave up when we compared inspo pics to what we ended up with because we concluded she was only going to make things worse. I'll certainly vocalize any issues for my wedding day, but we just decided to collectively deal with it.
