Hair and mua travel fees for destination wedding

Stephanie, on May 17, 2021 at 9:48 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 11
Hi all,
I’ll be having a destination wedding and want to know what I should be paying for when it comes to my hair and MUA. Should I be paying for flight and hotel on top of their services? Not sure what the usual is for this stuff. Thanks!

Typically, I think people find a hair and makeup artist near the wedding location.

When I paid for someone to go up with me to Yosemite from Southern California, I paid $1000. This covered her travel fees and room and an early start time. It was what I was quoted by several HMUA.

Yep, definitely standard to pay for their flight + hotel plus their regular service charges and tip. It can definitely add up, but I know how you feel when it comes to having someone you’re comfortable with. I’m doing the same. 😊

Any vendors that you prefer to have from home and not local to where the venue is located you should be paying the travel and accommodation costs of, otherwise they will likely be at a loss for doing the job and it won’t be worth their while. Chances are your ‘home’ based vendors will specifically require this if you choose to engage them for a destination wedding.

If they are only traveling to attend the wedding, then you should pay for their travel expenses. This is customary, even if they're traveling within the U.S. I have to pay a travel fee for my hair & makeup as she is traveling more than 20 miles from her salon for the wedding.

I’m more comfortable with someone I know doing my hair and makeup.

They are actually my friends who do hair and makeup and will be attending the wedding, but I agree, I’ll definitely be paying for their travel.

The HMUA will likely either bill these rates into her service charge/fee for doing your event, or you will be expected to cover them (you will end up paying for them either way). I would just have a conversation with them about what the expectations and responsibilities are.

Wow, I wasn’t being judgy (but your reply violates community guidelines). I was suggesting you can find someone local because paying for flight/hotel would be crazy expensive. You can look up reviews here, Google or Yelp for MUAs in the destination where you’re getting married.

I plan on having a destination wedding. I have been researching for days trying to find a black MUA and hair stylist. It seems highly unlikely. However; I will be visiting the country and will not give up on searching for some local talent. Otherwise, I will be spending money on flight and room accommodations for my hair stylist and MUA. I've been working with them for years and they are my friends. I don't plan on spending more than the flight, hotel, and fees.
