Hair Anxiety

Kathryn, on October 31, 2019 at 4:13 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 6
I have to admit, this is one of my biggest concerns for the day and my most self conscious point. After being diagnosed with diabetes, I was told and explained that my hair has been thinning out due to my high blood sugar levels. It means that my hair is a huge mess with gaps around my scalp, and I am super concerned about it.

Normally, I wear it down around my shoulders with some layers to give it as much volume as I can. I take biotin, I'm using a silk pillow, I'm using various volumizing spells and potions. But my scalp is still sparse. I can't wear updos for fear of my scalp showing in weird places - my hair is very thin.

That being said, I'd like to wear my hair up in a simple updo for my wedding day. I don't want to wear extensions if I don't have to - I really don't like the idea, and my red hair is hard to match - but I'm coming to the conclusion that I have very few options.

Does anyone have experience with thinner hair wedding styles? I might just be worrying too much, but the stress of my hair falling out might make it fall out more! I don't want to ruin wedding photos like I can see the gaps in some of my engagement photos.

I found a collagen/biotin pill combination worked better for me than just biotin. I also used Ovation Cell Therapy for about a year (my hair had some pretty bad damage from bleaching too much) and was super happy with the results. It is somewhat spendy, around $50 a month. Also, use a super good leave in conditioner & a wet brush after the shower and try to avoid traditional hair ties (use no-pull ones or scrunchies). And avoid using heat if you can! Head massage is supposed to help stimulate hair growth as well. By our wedding, I was super happy with my hair and I STILL paid for extensions. I bought $260 clip in extensions from Milk & Blush and I felt so bridal & confident and loved how they helped with length (but more importantly, volume).

Biotin and Prenatal vitamins! They work like magic lol my mom went through something similar and our hairstylist told her to relax (easier said than done) and take biotin. Prenatal vitamins also work amazingly!

Have you looked into topical hair growth serums too? I would look into those if you can afford it, you have enough time that you'd probably see great results.

There are products to help hide hair thinning. Creams, powders, keratin particles that cling to your hair, etc. I'm really sorry about what you are going through. I'm going to be wearing halo extensions and a topper, myself. There are also hair pieces you can incorporate into your updo to give you more volume. Also, your photographer should be able to touch up your photos if necessary.

I went on a medically supervised fast through Kaiser. There were diabetics in the class who only took the protein shakes and had to go off their medication because their blood sugar levels went down to normal (or close to it) during the diet. Something like that might address the root cause of your hair loss.

    Good luck!

Just know you're not alone! This has been a big concern of mine as well. I recommend a lot of what others have mentioned with taking biotin and researching topical treatments. I've also heard of a great product that I'm looking into called Toppik Hair Building Fibers. They're keratin fibers as another mentioned and help cover of areas of concern. This might help you achieve your updo and give you the confidence you deserve!

As I'm sure you know, with starting any new "treatment", be patient as it takes 3-6 months to even notice a difference or tell if it's working or not.

Also, if you've hired someone to do your hair, they should be able to give you suggestions on recommended styles.

Ugh, I'm kind of stressed about this too. I have PCOS and my hair is thinning on the sides, so it's noticeable when up. My dermatologist actually said to try Rogaine, the For Men kind not For Women. I did this back in college and it really helped but I stopped. So now I'm back to using it and hopefully it helps. I would also suggest Biotin.

Though I bet your hairstylist for your wedding will be able to give you suggestions on the style you should wear with thinner hair. I know when I go to the salon, my stylist always makes my hair look so full and no bald spots can be seen.
