Hair & Make Up Trials - When To Start?

J, on September 25, 2019 at 6:08 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 13
So I am officially 7 months away (AHHH!!) from our big day & I am curious to know when did you start your trials & when did you officially book your vendor?

I've looked at several "wedding planning timelines" - & let me tell you they're all over the board - but most suggest looking into HAMU closer to 2-3 months out. I am ITCHING to do my trials and am impatient lol, but should I wait closer to? I don't want my options to be limited if I wait too long... but also don't want to jump the gun.

Also note I am a bride who lives in Arizona but will be getting married in California (traveling for a trial is no big deal) & I also have VERY thick, pretty long, wavy hair - so I need a hairdresser who can handle my mane! Lol.

I think the best thing for trials is to do it when it coincides with an event aha for instance I had a trial about three months before my wedding because I had a formal event to go to anyway xD so that helped.

I'm and I am already inquiring some MUA's to know pricing and to get more info on there work. I would start looking and find the right person.

The MUA I liked posted on her Instagram she was already getting booked for 2020.

Smart! I was thinking of doing the trial before we take our engagement photos (we are doing them way late so they are more just fancy photos of us lol).

I booked my hair and makeup artist a year before as they book up really quickly. I ended up having to cancel my trial but my hair and makeup artist typically does them 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

I think waiting until only 2-3 months out is too late!! Many hair and makeup artists will be booked on your date by then. I found one through WWs vendor search, and even a year out, she had almost no May 2020 dates left. Luckily, she still had my date available! So, I booked her 14 months out, and I had my trial 11 months out.

Not saying that you have to do a trial that far out. But I would start looking now, and see if you can find some that have your date available.

Definitely book someone as soon as you can because they get booked quickly. In fact, my HMUA was the first vendor I booked after I got engaged because I knew who I wanted and she was in high demand. I booked her 11 months out.

    Hey date twin!

I have put down deposits for H&MU as I was panicking about things getting booked up and being unable to find someone. A couple of MUA I contacted last month were already booked up. I won't be doing the trials until after Christmas though.

I've been stressed about this too! I am 10 months out and I think I need to book soon after reading some of the responses.

I did two trials. One 13 months out and one 12 months out. Then I booked my favorite, and I did one more trial 1 month out.

    Hey hey!

I think that's what I'm going to do! I've reached out to two companies I really like and am hoping to do a trial in like maybe January!

I "booked" my hair dresser almost a year and a half out, but she's my old neighbor and was in cosmetology school at the time (now graduated). So it was an informal "hey will you do my hair" sort of thing. She'll be doing my trial in May when she's home (recently moved to CO) to do another friends hair for her wedding. I just book my MUA maybe a month or so ago. But I know she is filling up quickly. She'll be doing my engagement make up and I planned on asking about the trial then.
