Hair & Makeup options/alternatives

Angelina, on January 6, 2020 at 3:57 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 9

Hi everyone, first time joining and posting in a wedding forum! I'm sure I'll encounter other things I will need advice on as my wedding gets closer but so far, something I am struggling with is thinking of makeup and hair options. I can't wrap my head around paying as much for hair and makeup as I am finding, which is closer to $900 total for everyone with my trial. Here's my dilemma: my fiancé and I were talking about my 2 bridesmaids and the 2 moms doing their own and just having me get mine done. I prefer us all to be glammed up, not just me, especially for pictures. IF I did consider that further, I'm a bit more concerned about the moms. My mom always has a very natural look so I'm not sure she would be able to do a heavier look on herself. My fiancé's mom is a bit tricky, to put it respectfully, she needs assistance to achieve a mother-of-the-groom wedding ready look as compared to her daily makeup. With that being said, I prefer us all to have some help with hair and makeup. I'm not saying that the prices I'm finding aren't fair or more than fair for industry standards, or that the artists aren't worth that, I'm just at the point where everything is adding up and I would like some suggestions on alternative ideas for us to get our hair and makeup done. I've thought of going to a cosmetology school but the ones I saw online are closed on Saturdays. I also don't have a close friend to hire that does hair and makeup either. I am in San Diego, CA. Any other ideas would be appreciated, thank you!

Do you have an Ulta near you? I've heard that they have very reasonable prices for makeup services!

I do actually. However, I went there for my engagement photoshoot makeup and didn't have the greatest experience, unfortunately. I wouldn't want to go back for the big day.

What about Sephora? I'm not 100% sure, but I think they might also have in-store makeup application services.

I'm going to be honest that I kind of skimmed your message so I hope I answered correctly. I'm not sure if you promised this already but you're not obligated to purchase hair and makeup for your bridal party. They can purchase that themselves either on their own or with a makeup artist that you hire. As the first poster also said I would look around for a Sephora or a Mac as I want to stay there makeup services are probably $50 or less. That could be different in California as I know things tend to be more expensive there.

Can you just make it optional & have them pay for their own HAMU if they want to?

You don't have to pay for everyone unless you are requiring them to get the services. And it sounds like you might want to require it because you don't think they'll look good in your photos without professional services.

You live in a pretty high cost of living area, and while I realize you are saying you aren't disputing the actual quotes you are getting, you are going to have trouble finding lower cost alternatives. To save money, your best bet is to allow your wedding party to take care of their own hair and makeup and just appreciate them exactly as they are.

Thanks Maggie, I did want to be able to over everyone for that reason. I guess I'm more concerned about the moms. They just don't get dressed up often and have very different ways of doing their hair/makeup so I thought it would be nice to have them taken care of. But then I also don't feel right about paying for just me and the moms but not my bridesmaids. I think it would need to be everyone or just me....

Thanks everyone for your input! I'm currently exploring my options, including asking my bridesmaids what they would feel comfortable with and taking it from there.

It definitely sounds like makeup is the bigger concern here so you definitely have options!!

Have everyone get their makeup done professionally - it'll give you a chance to relax and spend the morning with the girls + moms and is fun for everyone. Then start thinking about hair:

    1. you can bite the bullet and pay for all services (my personal preference) and find a way to save some $$ the next six months or provide HMU in lieu of a bridesmaid gift

    2. pay some portion of the cost (is your budget $800 and the price is $900? pay what you can and have the ladies pay the rest)

    3. Have the ladies do their own hair and either just let them go with it or provide a basic guidelines...do NOT expect intricate up-do's....honestly in this case if I was a bridesmaid I'd probably just get a blow out at my local salon and end up paying $45 anyways so it'd be more fun to have the hair done altogether lol
