Hair stylist wants me to blow out my hair but my hair is wavy

Christine, on July 25, 2023 at 3:03 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 6
So I have moderately wavy/curly hair (like 2C/3A curls) and I want to keep as much volume as I can for my wedding and do a half up half down hairstyle. I really don't like blowing out my hair because it gives me less volume and I love my curls. My hair stylist told me today that I need to blow out my hair so she can curl it the day of but I don't own anything to blow it out and the one time I did get it blown out I didn't like it because it makes my hair look kinda straight. Also my hair doesn't hold curl well after it gets straightened.

Is this a normal request? Do I absolutely need to get my hair blown out? I did a hair trial with her a month ago and she brushed my hair out and curled it it in 5 minutes and it looked horrible in my opinion. I'm really stressed out now because my natural hair makes me feel the prettiest and my wedding is in 4 days 🙃. I would wear my natural hair but it needs some shaping up and I would need to curl some pieces myself and I'd be paying her to literally just twist a few pieces of hair up.
I attached a picture of my natural hair and what she did to it during the hair trial. I know it's not drastically different but I want to feel good about my hair on my wedding day. Opinions wanted please!Hair stylist wants me to blow out my hair but my hair is wavy 1

You have beautiful hair. I d mention you don’t have any tools to blow out it yourself and then make sure you tell her your concerns and what you didn’t think worked with the trial and/or any tweaks you d like to make to it. If you have pics specifically of your hair done for other events that you liked I d bring those and inspiration photos you have. Don’t be afraid to speak up politely. Congrats and happy wedding 🩷

Your natural hair is so much more beautiful than what the stylist did! I'd seek out a stylist that specializes in naturally curly hair.

I will share this important Mantra ...... "you do you". Why go with a hairstyle that doesn't make you feel pretty??? Your natural curls are gorgeous, embrace them and either do your hair yourself (or maybe a trusted friend can help?) or make a quick stop to the your hairdresser and be firm with what you want,

I mean there's ways to blow out curly hair, like a diffuser? Is this a professional stylist with experience with curly hair? I love your curls so you could show up for the hair styling with dry hair instead, and then let her put it up for you.

Oh no! Why did you stick with her after the horrible trial? But as a curly girl, I can definitely relate! Honestly a lot of professional hairstylists just don’t have specialized knowledge in curly hair, so you have to seek out a specialist. With only 4 days left, I get that it’s too late to seek someone else out. I would call her and tell her your concerns, and if she doesn’t give satisfactory answers, just move on and do your own hair. I agree with the above poster recommending a diffuser. They have them at Walmart/Target, so you should be able to get your hands on one last minute. Also, look into curly girl brands of *light* mousse or water-based holding gel. I emphasize light because you’re wanting to retain your volume, so you want to use product that will emphasize your curls and waves without weighing them down. Regardless, your hair is beautiful and it will all be okay!

I have very similar hair to yours! My hairstylist also asked me to blow dry my hair beforehand (seemed like a request they have for all their clients) - they mainly wanted to ensure they had clean, dry, product-free hair to work with. I rarely blow dry my hair at home, but use the Revlon hair dryer / hot air brush when needed - much easier than using a separate blow dryer and round brush!

Assuming it's too late to find another stylist and/or you'd lose your deposit, I'd bring pictures of how exactly you want your curls to look, as the curls in your trial picture look a lot less... curly... than your natural texture. I'd also emphasize wanting to ensure you have enough volume at your roots and that your hair doesn't hold curls well - they should then know to use enough product to make volume/curls last.
