Hair that doesn’t hold curl- solutions?

Alana, on January 8, 2019 at 11:17 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 11
I’m getting married in Washington state where I grew up but I live in North Carolina currently. I only say this because it further complicates the hair trial. I went home to visit family in December and thought I would knock out the few wedding details I had to do in person (another walk through of venue, meet wedding planner, hair/makeup).

I really wanted to love my hair. I had a lengthy discussion with her prior to starting in which I warned her that my hair does not hold curl unless you use enough mega-ultra strong hole in the ozone layer hairspray. I showed her what I wanted but with the caveat that an updo was also ok knowing it would have to hold all evening.

I don’t know if it was the products she used or if my hair just sucks this much. I’ll attach a photo of during the hair trial and of my hair two hours later. I’m very disappointed and don’t know what to do. I can’t fly back to do another hair trial.

Should I give up and go with an updo or wing it on a new hair stylist with no trial?

(also attached two photos from my fiancé’s birthday dinner which I did my own hair w/firm hairspray 4+ hour difference)

Have you considered just doing your own hair then? I think yours looks better.

This is one of the few cases I’d consider doing your own. Or otherwise do an updo

My hair also does not hold curl. Getting it professionally done is generally a waste of money because it’ll fall so fast. So I do it myself. This way I can hold the iron on each piece for extra long, I also use mousse before curling and that helps to hold the curl some.

Hey Alana! I love the braid that your hair stylist did but I see what you are saying about the curls. I think it looked better when you did it yourself! Maybe they can help with the braid if you like it and then you can curl it yourself! I have very fine hair that doesn't hold curl too and my best advice for it is to style it when it's a little dirty! I normally wash my hair the day before I know I'm curling it and it seems to hold a curl better!

My hair doesn't hold curls either, but I can't curl my own hair well Smiley winking I'm doing like a low bun even though I'd love for my hair down with curls. It's just not realistic for me.

Anyway, if you are totally against an updo, don't do that! Your hair looks better done by yourself so just do that as long as you're comfortable!

My hair doesn't hold curls well either. I did one trial and told the girl that (like you did) and by the end of my trial the curls had fallen. I wasn't a super huge fan of the makeup or hair, so I did another trial. The second woman did a WAY better job. She used a mousse prior & strong hairspray that held curls but didn't leave my hair crunchy. They stayed for hours after.

I definitely think what you did yourself looks better...but it also looks like a different kind of curl. What did your hairdresser use? Did you use a wand and she used an iron? Kind of looks that way. I have a really hard time getting curl to stay. I can get the best results with a wand. Forget a curling iron, that falls out within an hour or so.

We were getting married on the beach. I knew that my hair would not hold in the wind/humidity, so I went for an up do.

I would have her do the braid for you and bring the hairspray that you know works well on your hair. Then you can have her curl it with the same type of tool you use at home or even curl it yourself.

Take your hair spry to her on the big day. Tell her you love your hair when she styled it but in order to keep her magic you need more spray. Ta dah problem solved. Love the look by the way.

Thanks for all the helpful input! I think I’ll bring my hairspray and if it doesn’t look like it’s going to survive I’ll pin it up.

My hair never holds a curl, but I found that using a texture spray helps in addition to hairspray. Actually, the spray I currently use holds better than any hairspray I've ever used, and as a performer, I've tried so many brands. I would really recommend the Dry Bar Triple Sec spray. Put a little bit on the hair before you curl and then a light spray after.

As for the hair stylist, I would be super hesitant to pay all this money for my hair to potentially be a disappointment. If I had to guess I think that this stylist maybe doesn't know how to work with your specific texture. I would find someone that is more knowledgeable about your specific hair type or do it yourself.
