Hair trial feedback

Jessica, on July 25, 2020 at 2:10 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 22
Just has my hair trial. I’m foregoing the makeup trial until the day of. We have a mountain elopement so I was trying for something kind of bohemian and off my neck because it will likely be warm.

Any adjustments you’d suggest?? I’m thinking a smaller braid on the other side and/or a braid incorporated into the bun section?

Oh good question! I had to drive about 2 hours to the trial and I forgot to grab the dried flower hair pins that I have! Here’s a picture - but they are a tiny bit more pink and purple to match my bouquet.

I agree with you. A small braid on the other side might be nice. You could also start the large braid further on the side so it's kind of a crown.

Oh interesting. I never thought of that. I’d be concerned about my hair not standing up at much as hers though. I have average thickness hair.

I can be honest... I think it looks a little messy. I think more product when she is doing it and it will look smoother and cleaner

That’s kind of my feeling about her work in general. I’m not sure she’s capable of a smoother end result.

I would then look for someone else. I personally wouldn’t want someone that isn’t capable of giving me the final product I want for my big day!! You should have the look YOU want and not settle. Do you have the option to hire someone else?

I’m only a week out but I can try! I’m getting married in a pretty rural spot so not a lot of salons to choose from. I’ll reach out to one other and see what they can do.

I’ll also have to read the contract and see what happens if I break it. I hate conversations like this too but I think you’re right!

It sounds like it's probably best to stick with this stylist with so little time left, but she should be able to use product to help your hair stay better. Daughter washed her hair the night before and arrived at the stylist with dry, slept in hair. (Even applying dry shampoo the morning of can go along way to giving your hair more body and staying power before it is styled.) Daughter's hair tends to be pretty frizzy. The stylist used several different products and curled all of her hair with a wide-barreled curling iron and then pinned the curls to set until they were completely cool. (That gave her hair more body and volume, and the stylist did daughter's make-up while her hair was cooling.) She did a thick braid going both ways from daughter's side-part. Then she kind of teased the crown behind the braids to get some lift, and finally pinned all of the back into a bun of curls. Daughter's hair looked awesome for about 14 hours and stayed exactly the way the stylist had done it without looking stiff and plastered. Good luck! Smiley heart

This is super cropped, so it's pretty fuzzy....

Thank you for sharing these photos an inspiration! Her hair looks so nice. Basically not a hair out of place!

I have pretty flat hair so she teased it a lot but I feel like she didn’t comb over the top layer to smooth it out so my trial hair is very frizzy looking. The photos were literally after I walked out of the salon so the frizziness is not from wearing all day. She also used a ton of hairspray and there's about 50 bobby pins in my hair. It doesn't feel like it's going anywhere - it was just assembled sloppily.

I found one other stylist that might be able to squeeze me in. I’ll also try asking the current one if she can make the result smoother - but I’m afraid her skills aren’t there. I’m not seeing a lot of nice polished styles like this when I look at her work. The salon as a whole looks great but she’s the only one available now.

I would read the contract and check if your stuck in the contract then speak with her about using more product and be honest about you opinion on the style don’t feel pressured to say yes I love it if you don’t!! Ask her to do another trial with more product and see if she can maybe make it clean and smooth that way

Contract says cancellations within 21 days - full cost. I’d be out $350 for the hair and makeup and likely the same cost to rebook.

I hate being a demanding customer but that may be what I have to do to the day of get this to look as polished as I’d like. Unfortunately each trial is $100 so I'm not sure I want to do another!

I can also try sharing a very specific picture and saying “exactly this”. Like one of the below:

My hair is MUCH shorter and finer than my daughter's. (Like, kind of just below my chin-length bob.) Her stylist was able to do this with flat, short, fine hair. My impression is that it is all about using the right product.

Love the look, but agree you’ll need more volume and product at the root to make it last without it looking messy. Just tell her you love the style but need it more “locked in place” and smoothed.

I’ll allow some extra time the morning of in case something needs to be restarted. I’ll try to be more assertive with my feedback! That is a definitely weak spot of mine in all aspects of life!

She did curl, tease and spray hairspray at the roots. I feel like the issue was that all the hairspray and teasing made it impossible to come through and smooth down too. I took the style out at home later and it was a tangled mess.

I’d like to get away with less teasing - maybe just at the crown?
