Hair up or down and why?

Hannah, on September 25, 2019 at 8:12 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 39
I’m still trying to decide on a hairstyle before my trial but I’ve realized that no one can really give me suggestions on what to do with my hair because they don’t know my personal style, my preferences, or things I’m worried about. So instead, I just want to know what you’re doing/did with your hair and why you chose that style? Updo to get it off your neck? Down because you look like a 12 year old boy with it up? Lol. I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons of down versus up and I find that you guys always think of things that I never would’ve thought of!

I'm SO conflicted on how I want to do my hair. I feel like I look like one of the founding fathers anytime my hair is up, so I don't have high hopes that a fancy updo would change that for me lol. I was all set on having a half up half down style, but then I bought a dress with a pretty detailed back and everyone tells me not to hide it. I'll probably still go with the half up half down because I'd feel more like myself, not to mention the curls would make my hair shorter so you'd still see some of the back!

I opted to wear my hair up because we got married on the beach and I was afraid the wind would have it everywhere.

Based on your profile picture, I think daughter's hair was similar to yours in length. She has beautiful hair, and kind of a lot of it, but it does tend to frizz if there is any humidity at all and it does NOT hold any curl, no matter what she does. Her wedding was an outdoor wedding, in January, in So Cal. Odds were good that we'd have sun and decent temps (and we did), but wind and humidity that time of year are definitely possible. With either, she knew she'd hate her hair down. For those reasons, she was 100% updo, and it was GORGEOUS. Her HUMA made it look stunning, with plenty of height and fullness so she did NOT look like a 12-year old boy (I understand what you mean about that...). It had a side part, with loose french braids on either side, some height at the crown, and then all of the back was pinned in place curls. She had a sparkly headband tucked between the back of the braided sections and the crown, and wore a fingertip length veil pinned above the curls in the back for the ceremony. She looked stunning...and her hair stayed perfect for 12 hours without looking stiff. I'd talk with your HUMA about options and do a trial. Good luck! Smiley heart

My FH really wants to see me with my hair up and not in my face (which it usually is...), so I've decided to do an updo.

These are a couple styles I am thinking about. My HAMU trial is actually today at 1 o'clock so I will be posting photos of it later today. Fingers Crossed!

The first photo is my exact inspo picture! I’m wearing my hair up because 1.) all the curl would fall out by the reception if I wore it down 2.) if there was 5% humidity I would look like I stuck my finger in a light socket and 3.) my dress has an open back that I’d like to show off.

I’m planning on wearing my hair down. In my culture unmarried, young women wear there hair up like Princess Lea and once you get married and have children you start to wear your hair down in like braids. Smiley smile

Thank you! My hair will hold curl pretty well but it does frizz SO BAD! This is exactly the kind of feed back I was looking for, I’m just so intimidated by updos cause I’m so used to wearing my hair down. Lol. I haven’t had my trial yet but hopefully my girl will be able to pull off the look I’m going for. Thanks so much!

That’s a good point. I won’t be getting married on the beach but it’ll be December and I had no even thought about wind!

I tried updo myself and hated it aha. I did a trial for half up half down and liked it better. I always knew my hair looked better down than up.

Up - we got married outside, in July, in Alabama - plus, I wore my mother's cathedral length veil and I needed somewhere secure to tuck the hair comb as my hair is extremely fine.

I did half up half down and used extensions. I prefer my hair down and so does my husband. It didn't feel hot or heavy, I was happy with it!

I did mostly down with a few pieces pulled back. I don't really like updos on myself, so wanted it mostly down, but wanted some back so it was off my face and had somewhere to put the veil.

When I was looking at options I also looked up pictures of my wedding dress to see how they styled the girls hair in those photos. Many times they work as suggestions for what looks good with the style of dress.

I decided to go with an up-do because the back of my dress is SO pretty and I want it to be seen! I also did not want to be messing with my hair all day, which I tend to do. I did, however, want something soft because I don't have the face for a harsh, slick back, look. Here is my inspo pic.

Girl, wear it down and pinned all to one side. Show off that back and keep it down at the same time!

I'm going with it down because I have a fat face and I feel having it down will detract from the fact that I'm basically the Kool Aid Man.

I've thought about this! Honestly most pictures I've seen with this style just look so glamorous that I feel like I would look really silly because I wouldn't pull it off lol

First of all, do not insult your own intrinsic glamour! But I get what you're saying. I think if you kept the curls on the big waves side and made sure there was plenty of looseness, you could keep it more understated. I'd probably add some sort of not-overly-glam flower or greenery. Or ribbon! Whatever works with your style! And eventually when you're done with the formal portraits that will show off the back of your dress, you can take the pins out and toss those glorious waves in your guests' faces on the dance floor!
