Hair/makeup issue

Mandi, on May 14, 2022 at 11:38 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 28
So I have my neighbor doing my hair and makeup for my wedding. I asked her for a day to try different styles. And I showed her a picture of the hairstyle I wanted. My theme is 1940s but I wanted my hair braided on the side. She said that wouldn’t do and proceeded to do my hair and have it down (that’s the only style she did) took about 3 almost 4 hours, and all it was was just curling my hair and a lot of hairspray and two Bobby pins that’s it. I’m getting married July 2nd. The issue I’m having because I really struggle with using my voice is I didn’t like the hairstyle at all, it was frizzy and a hot mess by the end of the day, and the makeup was old. Not being mean but you know that certain smell you get from old makeup that’s what it smelled like. I then went into the mirror and politely told her I liked it only to try not to panic because I didn’t even recognize myself and I felt completely not me. How do I approach this nicely?

Be honest with her and find a professional via Google

Just say politely that you were able to find somebody else (hopefully a professional) but "thank you so much for being willing to help me out!" And if you haven't already, be sure to thank/compensate her for her time properly doing that trial. I assume it's not her profession to do hair and makeup, so I can't see why she'd be offended if you found somebody else who does it for a living. 😊👍

Thank you the sad thing is she is very professional in the hair and makeup industry and that’s what is making it harder for me to say something. I pray I’m not wrong for being like this but I think this is where it’s hard for me to find my voice, she was very upfront to me by telling me to get my teeth whitened and get two facials before the wedding. Im sorry I’m just at a loss.

Oh that's... a lot... if you aren't really feeling comfortable with someone. But you are 1000% allowed to hire someone different after considering what it is you want. Tell her that is a style issue, and you found someone who is more specialized in what you want for your day. And honestly at the end of the day... who cares if she is offended or not? This isn't an important person in your life, and even if she was, you're still allowed to pick what's best for you when paying for a service!!

Just tell her that you want her to come to your wedding as a guest to relax and have a good time because she's important to you and that you've found some one who wil do the hair makeup. ( that's the excuse I'm using for my cousin who does hair/makeup for a strip joint!)

It seems if she is a professional she should follow your direction more closely. But it certainly does not sound good if the hair style does not last throughout the day. The wedding pros should know how to make makeup and hair last while also making the photographer's work easier. Let her do your FH's hair instead.

If you're comfortable with little white lies, you could tell her that someone gifted you professional hair/makeup/etc. at a salon. I feel like that would help.

My thoughts exactly. Just because someone is licensed, doesnt mean theyre professional or talented lol. If she were truly a respected professional the results would've been better and she would've listened to OP.

If she were truly a well-respected and talented professional in the industry she would not have treated you like that. She would've respected your desires for your wedding day and trialed the hairstyle you asked for. It also wouldnt have taken that long to accomplish the simple style you described. Just because someone is licensed, doesn't mean they're professional, talented, or can handle the demands of wedding specific style.

I'd just go ahead and hire someone else who would be able to make your vision happen. 3-4 hours for curls that don't last and 2 bobby pins sounds like way too much time for such a low payoff, and using old makeup is a major red flag. If you're not happy with her work then that's all the reason you need not to use her services. If she's truly a professional then she should get that, and if she doesn't get it then you probably dodged a few bullets by not using her.

Maybe your choice has been made. But another option would be to go with sprayed on makeup and use this as the reason to go to another stylist/makeup team.

(Oops. I meant this just as a general reply to the thread.)

Sorry. I was not quite sure of the term when i posted. I meant airbrush makeup. It is supposed to last longer and also should feel like less makeup but still cover well.

You should find many of the beauty vendors on WW who offer this.

I made the massive mistake of not communicating that I hated my hair the day of my wedding (May 6th 2022) and I regret it! I literally hate every photo of myself because it is definitely not what I wanted. It looks like I did it days prior and I myself can do a much better job at it. My suggestion is just go another route because you are going to regret it in the end. If you don’t like it now, you won’t the day of.
