Hair/Makeup Questions

Lynne, on January 28, 2022 at 10:31 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12
My big day is in 6 months.

When do I start getting ideas for hair? Should I wait until I have found my dress? What about makeup? I don't wear much, but I want to wear a little bit.

You can certainly start looking for ideas and inspiration now! Search for a few different options, just so you can decide later based on your dress. If your dress has a really detailed back that you want to show off, you might want to consider an updo. Maybe search for 1 or 2 favorites of each style? Meaning, 1-2 updos that you really like, 1-2 half up/half down styles, and 1-2 all down styles? You really don't need to decide on which style to go with until you do your hair/makeup trial.

Hair and make up trials usually happen 1-2 months before your wedding date, so you should definitely have your dress and accessories by then. A lot of brides choose their hairstyles based on what will look best with their dresses (for instance, if your dress has a beautiful intricate back, you will probably want to have an updo to show it off). And you will want to choose a hairstyle that works with your accessories, whether it’s a veil, headband, crown, etc.

If you want it professionally done, you will need to book a vendor ASAP. Otherwise you have some more time to figure it out.

There is a hair salon 5 miles from the hotel I'll be staying at. I've talked with them and they said I can set up an appointment to get in that morning to get my hair done before I get my dress on. Which is perfect.

I had two hair/makeup trials last summer (about 8 months out) at my local salon (they are 15 minutes from our venues), as I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I used one of the appointments for my engagement photos (which we used for our Save the Dates), and the other for a wedding I was attending. I already had my hair accessory, and my dress was ordered. As other posters mentioned, hair/makeup trials are typically closer to your wedding date, but, if you are going somewhere you’ve never been, I’d recommend booking one earlier. I plan to do another trial next month (about 2 months out) with my mom’s veil.

Definitely start looking at ideas now. Browse Instagram for your area for hairstylists and makeup artists. Take a look at Pinterest as well for ideas. Reach out immediately to vendors to make sure they are available for your day as well as getting a trial before you book them.

I'd start now, but your dress is going to determine how you'll wear your hair. Like if the dress has an amazing back, you might want to consider an up-do. That kind of thing.

On my hair trial, they didn't exactly to the hair that they did on my wedding day and also she put it away before I left the salon saying "that one can never do the same hairdo twice so she'll just to an approximate hairdo" but I would now absolutely insist on doing the actual hairdo and getting opinions because the hairdresser made me a very strange hairdo for my wedding day.

Also, why not do it earlier if it is not very expensive to see how you feel about it and how it looks in different lighting on photos.
