HALP. Is wine in plastic glasses tacky?

So.Many.Questions, on April 3, 2016 at 3:53 PM

We're working on stocking our bar, and we have to buy EVERYTHING for it, including drink ware, etc. I was planning on doing beer, wine and mixed drinks and just having the clear disposable cups..... But I don't know how I feel about drinking wine from plastic. Should I be buying actual wine glasses...

As others have said, this is all dependent on your venue. Outdoor backyard wedding? Sure. Getting married at a mansion in Newport? Spring for glasses.

I would say it's completely okay as long as it is like the hard nice plastic.... I personally think that it's better if dropped.... our venue doesn't allow glass for that reason

I think it really depends too. I was in a relatively upscale barn venue this weekend, and they used clear, hard plastic cups. I would probably never use them inside, but backyard/park/museum (cause many don't allow glass) venues? It's fine. I wouldn't even bother with the cute imprinted ones, because no one cares.

If you're doing a champagne toast, as in one glass per person? I'd proabably do real ones since the disposables cost just about as much.

It's at this place called Founders Hall in Charleston and the plan is to stay outside on the patio and in the grass, so it'll be nice without being too formal and stuffy. NO beer pong lol.

@honey badger that meme literally made me laugh out loud. I could see my friends doing that.

I don't love the look but I'd get over it as long as it was an open bar! If you're concerned you could look into the acrylic stemless glasses. They are nicer looking but more expensive than a standard plastic cup.

My venue suggested nice plastic glasses. People are very used to them anyway.

I don't think it's a big deal, if they drink enough they won't know what they're drinking out of.

If it's an open bar give me the plastic! Lol

There are some PRETTY plastic cups that feel like glass. They're a bit more but not as much as glass

This is just my personal opinion, but I would rent glassware. I do not like drinking wine from plastic.

Where I live, you can rent really nice stemware for $1 per stem. They also have (not as nice) glassware for .50 cents per stem.

Honestly, with an outdoor wedding I would expect a plastic cup anyhow.

Who's washing those bad boys if you rent glass?

Dollar Tree sells both champagne and wine plastic ware and would be fine.

I think either is fine. If you go with plastic - I personally prefer the brittle, super clear plastic low ball glasses to plastic stemware. I've been to a lot of conferences and used both - the plastic stemware just doesn't seem to have the weight necessary to keep those suckers grounded.

@MrsA, if you rent them, the rental company washes them, as they have to be sanitized. They may ask that they be rinsed, but not washed.

We are! These are what we purchased - http://www.samsclub.com/sams/chinet-24-ct-stemless-wine/prod15260076.ip?navAction= The price is pretty amazing and they look nice in person!

I also bought the brittle clear plastic cups in 12 oz for cocktails and beer. I don't like the flexible plastic cups (they remind me too much of Solo Cups) but I'm at a park, and while I can have glass I do not feel like packing up 6 glasses per person of used dirty glasses and carting them home to be washed. No way. No how.

Our venue doesn't allow for glassware near the pool (where cocktail hour and dinner will be) so we purchased some nice acrylic double old fashioned and wine glasses from Bed Bath & Beyond. I don't know how many guests you're expecting but for us it was feasible. We'll be at 50 max if everyone shows up.

I cut out the glasses from our rentals because it was going to cost around $600 extra. We're having a pretty casual wedding (Cornhole, fried chicken, bluegrass band) and we just got the same plastic cups for all the drinks.
