Hand fasting cords

FutureMrsDjTimmy, on September 6, 2016 at 10:54 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 11

So, we have decided to do a hand fasting, and I have seen the prices on the cord, and feel like it's a bit excessive.

Have any of you made your own?

What helpful hints can you throw my way??

Thanks in advance

We are going to do a hand tying ceremony as well! I am making our up in 3 different ribbon colors and braiding them together and adding charms at either end that mean something to us! Probably going to go with a raven, owl, and cletic knot charms.

As far as tips, it's really depending on what material you are going to go with. We went with braided ribbons to do a long skinny cord. Some people do this just one thick ribbon, others still use a silk scarf or braided silk scarves. Really depend on the aesthetic you would like, or what means the most to you, and that will lead you to your material.

We just ordered one- and I love it- it came with a a little paper explaining the history and more importantly why the cord was tied the way it was.

I have no idea how much he paid for it- he ordered it- but it's beautiful and I didn't have to DIY it. so- win.

Our officiant suggested we attach 4 ribbons or cords to like a binder ring and leave it at that. So that's probably going to be my favorite diy. Are you going to save your cords afterwards in a shadowbox or anything?

Our officiant makes them for the ceremony, based on colors you want, etc. Maybe ask your officiant for suggestions?

There are many types of handfasting cords. They can be made of one, several or many cords/ribbons with beads, tassels, or charms placed at each end. If you love to DIY, making it can be fun. We had the cord of three strands at our wedding which is a little different and I made it.

We did this at our wedding! Such a different and special ceremonial element. We used a strip of tartan fabric that represents his last name. You can definitely go with something less expensive that will have more meaning for the both of you.

I usually make mine for my couples unless they have something they've fallen in love with and obtained....

FH and I are also being handfasted. We've already done a betrothal ceremony for a year and a day, and we braided our ties in meditation together. It was one of the most beautiful moments in our relationship. For the practical aspect, we ordered the satin cord from Amazon. We had six ties and each of them used two yards of each color cord. I also ordered silver cord ends, but they didn't fit so I tied the ends with embroidery floss. I'll get better cord ends and tassels or charms for the wedding. We hung our tied cords over this sculpture and I like them there Smiley smile
