When my husband and I were married this past Sunday, we had incorporated a Hand Washing into our ceremony. We had wanted a nonreligious service but had also wanted to add something that would have meaning for the relationship and the ceremony. I came across this idea online along with what to do and an example script. The meaning in performing this is you are cleansing yourself of all past wrong doings and are starting your marriage with a clean slate. We knew this had a meaning to it for us, but what we had not thought of was what it would mean to our guests. Let me tell you the responses we got after was how "profound and moving" it was for them. No one had ever seen this before and added how it should be used more often.
The outcome of this cleansing went beyond our relationship. A 13 year nonexistent relationship was mended the day after our wedding with a very positive response for both parties involved. How powerful is that!!
If you're looking for something unique to add to your ceremony, consider this option. Google "hand washing ceremony" and you'll find all the info. I will add that once I found the script, I used that as a template adjusting the wording so it represented us.
