Handfasting Diy!

Joining of the Factions, on June 29, 2018 at 7:36 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 11
FH and I are having a handfasting ceremony and I decided to make our cords rather than buying them (they can get expensive to purchase online or having them custom made by someone else). Even though our wedding is over a year away, I have a lot of DIY projects that need to be done. Finally finished our cords and I'm very happy at how they turned out! It took me 2 months to make them between braiding, adding charms, etc (I'm an extremely busy person). Anyone else having a handfasting ceremony, and if so, are you making your cords or just going to buy them?

    We made our own too.
    Your designs are beautiful.
Our design was simpler and only took me about 5 hours to make all three. We haven't added any charms yet though.

We are doing one, I'm buying mine off Etsy though, found a beautiful one for only $35 so that's something I'm going to let someone else make lol. Those are beautiful though! They remind me of the ones at the shop I'll be buying from!

Your cords are beautiful! We bought ours off Etsy and the lady braided them during the full moon, so hopefully the lunar energy will be with us on the day of our wedding!!! Any one doing any particular type of knot?

Usually during a wedding ceremony the couple has a candle lighting ceremony or a sand ceremony. Handfasting cords combine that little something extra and the exchanging of vows or in addition to. The officiant ties the cords around the hands of the couple while reciting the promises. You can have as many cords as you want (usually no more than 6, but we're only using 3), and the colors represent what you want in your marriage.

Thank you for your input! Now I'm working on our broom (we jump over it after we are declared husband and wife and represents our first official act done as a couple to symbolize working together)!

    I love wedding DIY!

Those are beautiful! I tried using ribbon, but I've got 3 cats and every time I worked on them they would shred the ribbon (they are feisty little wee-beasts😂).

Your cords turned out beautiful! Love the knots and the charms. I am pretty much out of time, so I'll probably end up buying. I'll try to at least get them from someone who puts some energy into them. Blessed be!

How are you planning on storing them after? We are also having a handfasting and plan on making the cords ourselves. But, I can't decide the best way to store them in our home after. I want them displayed but also protected from the cats. I was thinking a type of shadow box, but with the length of the cords, I don't want them to look a jumbled mess inside. Thoughts?

Emily, you might have some really good luck with a shadow box with maybe a couple of nails in one of the two large, flat sides. That way the cord can be rested on the nails, and it won't look jumbled. Either that, or a really nice, silk bag. Best of luck!

A shadow box is a great idea for displaying them! I finally got the charms added to mine this week! Now just have to figure out the hurricane and we'll be good to go. :/
