Handfasting ribbons/fabric?

Lindsey, on October 15, 2019 at 10:55 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 4

My fiance and I are planning to include a handfasting with our ceremony. We haven't decided where in the ceremony, but maybe between the vows and ring exchange/I do?

I wasn't really a huge fan of the selection on Etsy, and since I'm pretty crafty myself, I figured I could probably make my own.

I'd appreciate any pics of what y'all used at your weddings, and any detail about where you got the fabric or what type of fabric you used.

Thanks!

I might recommend waiting till after the rings to do the handfasting, but that's just my experience.

You might want to check out fabric stores and look for actual cord like what you might use for curtains or furniture trim. They would be sturdier than ribbons but your colors might be more limited.

We are probably doing this, will probably go to Joann’s and find some fabric that represents us and see them into long strips and braid them.

    Hey Lindsey!

If you haven’t found any handfasting cords that you like on Etsy, it’s a great idea to make one yourself! This way you can ensure that the material used is important to you as a couple.

There is no right or wrong way to create a handfasting cord. You can use as many or as few pieces of material as you wish. Since you are making it yourself, perhaps you could do a couple of trial runs to see what is easiest for you or what you like the look of the most.

The material you use can be part of a family heirloom, gifted from friends or family, or just fabric chosen in a significant color or pattern.

When you decide can you clue me in on how to make one myself? Haha! How long, what type of material, how many ribbons are you using? I looked at a few YouTube videos and they are all different. Trying to figure out when to do it in the ceremony, how to do it (do we tie them, does someone else tie them, and how complicated). There was one video where they used a lot of ribbons, it seemed a bit long considering we are also incorporating another tradition into the ceremony that will take a few minutes as well.
