Handwritten or Calligraphy - Wedding Invites

Did you hand write the addresses on your wedding invitation envelopes or did you hire a calligrapher? I’m having a hard time deciding what route to do.

I'm handwriting ours and learning calligraphy a little better in the process. We decided that it was too expensive to hire someone and I could do it instead. So far, it's gone pretty well and I think once I really get into it and have a rhythm it will go pretty quick.

I hired a calligrapher to design the invitation and address the inner and outer envelopes. I'm a calligrapher myself, so this was something that was REALLY important to me. I wanted people to receive stunning invitations, even though I knew the majority of them would throw them away. But if it's not that important to you, then you can definitely write them yourself. Also, a good way to find a calligrapher is too see if there is a local calligraphy group in your area, they can recommend people in a variety of price points.

The hard part is getting the final list settled on, and gathering the proper titles and addresses. It took us about 2 hours each, an hour two consecutive nights. And my brother proof read them, 2 do overs. 120 invitations. 190 people. Not bad. No returns.

I thought that was a brilliant idea until I put the first label on. My envelopes were pearlescent. The labels ending up looking like white labels!!!
So I am saving them for the Thank You cards, where I will have white envelopes. Not shiny.

We used Shutterfly and had them addressed. They looked gorgeous. Much much cheaper than hiring a calligrapher and I have really good penmanship and addressed my brothers invites two years ago and it was time consuming and exhausting. Unless you’re used to writing that much, I don’t think I’d go that route. After addressing his, i did not want to address ours

Here's a photo of what I'm talking about! This one is $4.49. Our envelopes are a natural white color so black ink will be fine. It shouldn't take too much ink to address 115 envelopes.

I had them printed, but I have horrid handwriting, so it just made more sense.

After being that person that rips envelopes to shreds when I open my mail, I didn't see the point in spending money and time on the addressing when there's so much else to do! I probably would've done something more fancy if we had a small guest list, but since we are having a semi-large wedding, both me and FH agreed that it wasn't worth hiring a calligrapher. People generally just throw the envelope away instantly, and so to me it felt like I would be literally throwing money away Smiley xd

I do think if you have it in your budget, it is nice for sure. For us, it just wasn't logical.

We went the sticker route! Got the label stickers from staples and just chose a fancy font. Printed two out too, so they are already addressed for our thank you envelopes. Smiley smile

We just wrote ours with a gold Sakura pen on black envelopes. They looked super fancy because of the ink and cursive. Nobody saved the envelopes (we asked) but they DID save the invites so I'm glad we paid more attention to that part and making it look nice.

I got the addresses printed on in a fancy font from our computer at home. My handwriting is way too sloppy and we didn’t have it in the budget to hire someone. If you want them to be super amazing and you can afford it I would hire someone. Also less stress if someone else does it right ?

We hand wrote ourselves. Honestly I understand the whole font thing, because no one is going to look at them for no longer than a minute. Save your coins

I agree with Gen. We are using labels with a special font for ours. It’s easier and not expensive.
