Hanging Paper Lanterns

dks64, on April 21, 2015 at 8:18 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I am obsessed with the look of paper lanterns, it's actually the only thing I truly want for my wedding. My dilemma is I don't want to have a lot to do the day of and I honestly don't know how to execute this idea. We can't put any holes at all in the wall (which is understandable), so how should I put them up? Fishing wiring and tape? Should I put them on a string? What's a fast and easy way to execute this idea? I'm not very crafty. Maybe they'll let me hang the lanterns the day of the rehearsal, since the room isn't booked at all that Saturday and there are no weddings before mine on that Sunday. Any ideas?

I can't do this over the entire room, I was thinking just over the dance floor, the couples table, and/or cake table. This is my absolute inspiration. My colors are dark blue, soft pink, and white.

I was told no command hooks either. They apparently tear up the walls they have (brides have done it before). I asked about tape, she just said no duct take. Scotch tape is fine, as that comes off easily.

What, no command strips? D: Bring a lot of scotch tape.

I know, that's what I thought too! Although I don't know if they'd work anyway since they'd be hung from the ceiling. They'll typically hooks, not full circles. I'm just worried the tape won't hold and will fall on my cake or dancing guest :p Should I hang them up one by one or Macgyver something like a poster board with the fishing line poked through. Then hang the poster board? I'm brainstorming, but not sure how it would work out. Please don't hesitate to tell me if you think it might not work.

    Apparently, tape is doable. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/attach-paper-decorations-ceiling-72293.html

I'm having the same thoughts... I was thinking maybe some sort of putty?? My initial thoughts (NO clue if it would actually work) is to string them together on fishing string then put little dabs of putty and tape - i'll need to research more but that's what I'm hoping/thinking. I love lanterns Smiley laugh

Does putty come off of paper walls? That might work!

No putty will ruin paper walls. Scotch tape will rip paper as well. I hung lanterns with scotch tape and fishing line and 1/3 fell over night.

Are there any ceiling vents, lights etc that you could use to anchor the string from corner to corner etc? scotch tape will not hold the weight of a string of many, but can work if you hang individually.

You could also use TALL bamboo poles or two by fours painted etc .. in buckets of sand in the corners and string across this way.

No vents and we can't hang them on the chandeliers. I was thinking of hanging them individually. Hmmm... I wonder how the bucket idea would work.... I wonder if they'd let me use packing tape, it holds pretty well.

Packing tape has a much stronger adhesive for sure!

I designed 2 8 ft PCs of wood trim
drilled small holes in center and make a big mobile . I pulled the fishing wire thru and glued a bead to hold it at top of hole.
We do have hooks in our ceiling but I’m sure you could put a command strip and they’d never see it
    they come off easily...
