Has anyone changed their last name during Covid?

Gisela, on November 27, 2020 at 10:53 AM Posted in Married Life 0 6
What was the process like changing your last name during COVID? I am getting married 1.2.21 and want to change my name ASAP, but I’m curious as to how social security offices and dmv limitations are affecting this.

Thank you!

All security offices are closed so you will need to get their form off the website and mail in in with photo and paper evidence that they will mail back to you. At least in my state that was the first step. I could not even do my driver's license. Some of our DMV's are appt only but once your social security is registered then you can go to the DMV and then go from there.

You have to Mail the application as well as the supporting documents to SSA. They will Mail your original documents back as well as your new SS card. That process took 2 weeks for me to receive mine (I am in Maryland). While I was waiting for my SS card I made an appointment online to get my license, I had my appointment today and had to take my marriage certificate as well as my updated SS card. They told me that I will receive my updated drivers license within 7 business days.

It is a pain! The offices are closed so you'll have to utilize mail.

That was supposed to be my wedding date also until it was postponed however we got legally married already to not deal with the legalities closer to the wedding. I live in PA and once we got our marriage license I mailed out the SS forms, marriage license and passport (you can use current drivers license also) to the SS department. That took a few weeks and once I got that I headed to the DMV (they gave me all the forms to fill out but I also printed it out just in case) with my marriage license, new SS and drivers license) luckily the whole process only took 20 minutes. Hopefully it’s as easy for you and hope this helps!

I mailed my passport and marriage certificate to our local SSA office 2 weeks after our wedding, which was around October 12. I received my new social security card this past Wednesday (11/25). Since I had the week off, I went to a nearby DMV office Wednesday afternoon. I was able to get everything changed over (maybe a total of 1 hour between the line and processing). They said I should have my new license in a couple of weeks.
