Has Anyone Done The Name Change Services?

Kelsi, on April 29, 2020 at 10:15 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
Honestly, I don’t know about everyone else but I’m overwhelmed having had to cancel our wedding because of COVID19 and life stressors. I was looking at the different name changing services out there and I’m considering it because it sounds like it’d simplify my life a little bit right now and I’m all for it.

My question is: Has anyone tried one of the many services out there? Is it worth it? Tricks, tips and recommendations are welcome!

I looked into it (our wedding is in October, so I haven't had to change my name yet) and didn't see the point. It looks like you're paying a fee so that they can send you free forms that you can find online through a quick google search and it won't save you a trip to the BMV or Social Security.

That’s kind of what I was thinking too! But some of them will pre-address envelopes/fill out the information so you just have to sign and seal for send off. Obviously once you finish the DMV/SS part. I just wasn’t sure how overwhelming that process can normally be.

I looked into it to, and I don't think it's really worth it. I spent all of 20 minutes in the SS office and got my card in the mail the next week. I sat at my DMV for awhile, but you can only do it in person in my state. The forms take only a few minutes to fill out. For my credits cards/bank, I just had to email them scanned copies of my driver's license with my new name and a copy of my marriage certificate. Passport was also easy. I just filled out the form online, printed it, and sent it off with my passport and marriage certificate. Those were the only things with forms, and they weren't particularly long. The passport form had the address on it. It took all of 1 minute for me to copy the address onto the USPS mail envelope. People definitely use these services since they still exist. I honestly just don't think they're worth it. In reality, it would have maybe saved me an hour of my time at most (and that's being really generous).

I didn’t. Changing your name is a pain in the butt, but it’s really not THAT difficult or time consuming. Social security took 20 mins. Passport took 20 mins. License took longer but that’s because the DMV sucks lol. Honestly getting a new license was the only part that was really time consuming and annoying. I just don’t feel like it’s worth the money to pay one of those places.. especially because you have to give them your social security number and I’m not a fan of giving that out unless I HAVE to.

I looked into a few as well, I agree with the others, it seems like a waste of money!

My husband was going to buy it for me as part of my wedding gift before we had to cancel bc of covid. After looking into it more we decided not to do it and save the money. I made out a list of the steps I needed to take and where I needed to change my name to make it easier for me and cross of my check list as I go.
