Has anyone had a 'semi/nearly naked' cake?

We decided on a semi/nearly naked cake, but now I'm starting to worry that without the icing covering the entire cake, the cake will become dry. Did anyone with this type of cake have any issues?

    @Bailey: Fondant is primarily intended to be used for decoration. While edible, it is like modeling chocolate: pretty to look at but not really intended to be eaten. Most bakers will use a thick layer of icing to adhere it, so that it can easily be peeled off while leaving enough icing for the cake.

    I agree with @Celia: they are ugly and look unfinished, whether you want my opinion or not. They do have a reputation for drying out and/ or looking bad because they have to be made *just right* and it is extremely easy to screw them up.

    I would advise against it, but you're going to do what you're going to do. As a guest, I'd be extremely disappointed. It's easy to scrape icing off a slice of cake if you don't care for it, but you can't add it. You may as well be serving sweet bread. Yuck.

    @Katie: The dust thing makes zero sense, since any and all cake will be subjected to that regardless. All food is, for that matter.

    @mna yes but as you mentioned fondant is intended to be taken off not eaten, therefore technically the dust does not get on the cake itself.

    I'm not a fan of either the taste or the look. My issues are that naked cakes are not tasty and that naked cakes look like someone forgot the frosting.

    These answers, my goodness. Our baker does them, went to an event and tasted the cake, wasn't dry at all. However, she's the bomb, so just make sure you hire a baker with experience in this trend.

    @Katie: My point was that literally every article of food you eat comes into contact with dust and dirt and whatever is in the air, and it can't be helped.

    Have you had any consultations with bakeries? We only had one so far, but they asked us all types of questions. We weren't particularly interested in the naked style, but I would imagine your baker would have input Smiley smile

    Fondant does not prevent cake from drying out. Plenty of cakes are frosted with just frosting and they are just fine ..and I've also never heard of fondant being removed before serving. Wtf? You don't like it, you eat around it.

    A naked cake should not dry out as the crumb surrounding each tier should protect it. Meaning the natural crumb of the cake ...

    Oh btw just because there is a lack of frosting on naked cakes, doesn't mean they look like a child made it. Other design elements can be added to it.

    @Celia and I don't see the point of brides who have extravagant cakes or brides who have just cupcakes, but that's their choice to have them. You don't have to get the point.

    I've made a naked cake before and spent probably an hour on the flower arrangement that went on top. -_-

    Yes, they are different and are not for everyone.

    But I don't think you will have any issues with it being dry.

    I'm having one too!!! It's going to be red velvet. This was my inspiration pic for the baker. My FMIL hates it...But, I hate icing lol I meant to add, our baker does them all the time, our friends cake was from her and jr was awesome.

    @Mizzz: I have yet to attend a wedding where guests were not peeling off the fondant before eating their cake, unless they didn't know better. I tasted it once, it has the texture of pre-chewed gum, or it wouldn't be that bad imho.

    Fondant may not protect against drying out, but any baker who knows what they're doing will tell you that frosting, which is BENEATH the fondant, DOES.

    @Bailey: You don't see the point of an extravagant cake, yet you want one, just in naked form.

    @MNA and what exactly is extravagant about the cake I am wanting? I never once gave details of what I am wanting other than it will be a naked cake. The picture is for reference, not of what I am wanting. Don't assume things.

    We are having a semi-naked cake. I love the look of them. I find it absolutely absurd to pay $400+ for a wedding cake just to have all of that icing. We are having a smaller cake just to cut then a bunch of different kinds of desserts.

    @Bailey: Generally, people don't order a showpiece cake for it to sit in the back. If it's showy enough you want it front and center rather than, say, a single, simple tier to cut and sheet cake in the back (which would defeat the purpose of a naked cake), then you want a cake just as much for show as function. That is exactly the same reasoning people want a nice decorated cake as well.

    Call it what you want, and turn your nose up at others if you want, but it's just extravagance in a different guise.

    No assumptions necessary. Unlike some, I possess powers of deduction, logic, and reason.

    Halfsies treeshade??!! Smiley smile I say the more the better!!! I even went as far to ask for a cup of frosting on the side of the cake for me. I think the baker thought I was joking...haha.
