Has anyone quit their jobs recently before getting married?

Janice, on June 23, 2020 at 10:21 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

I'm not quitting my job because of wedding planning. I originally wanted to stick it out at my current job until after I get married, but that isn't until August 2021 and I really don't like my job. I haven't started wedding planning that much so it's not the stress from wedding planning that makes me want to quit. This job just makes me dread working every single day and every weekend I worry about work until Monday rolls around again.

So my question is has anyone quit their job while planning for their wedding? Did you have enough saved for most of the wedding before quitting? Or did you work some odd jobs for extra income before finding what you really wanted to do? I'm nervous since the economy is so bad now I won't be able to find a job for many months. But I've been thinking about quitting for a while now and trying to come to terms with the fact that I'll have to scale down on the wedding a lot.

I do have a good amount of money saved up, but I just don't understand how people save up for a wedding, a down payment and retirement! Why does everything in this world cost so much?! Just wanted to see if anyone out there is in the same boat as me.

Don't quit a job without a new job lined up. If you don't like your job, then look for others.

If you plan to quit working after marriage and something happens, you are legally protected. If you quit before you get married and god forbid something happens to your FH or he calls off the weddings, you will be screwed.

    I agree with this.

Plus the job market is not great. I have been unemployed since covid and I’m having trouble finding anything.

I'm currently looking for a new job. But I have no plans to quit or give my 2 week notice until I find another job. I don't want to lose my health insurance until I have something lined up.

Omg I’m in the same position, I hate my job lol I’ve been searching....but Covid affected opportunities. My job is offering voluntary separations with payment until December but I don’t want to take a chance.

Absolutely wait to find another job first. Especially if you live in the US and your health insurance is tied to your job.

Words of advice - DON'T quit your job to plan a wedding! Quit ONLY if you have a job lined up. With so many jobs out there lost due to Covid, it's probably not even the right time to start looking, but if you must, don't quit before having a new job.

As others have said, I wouldn't quit until you've found somerhing else. I've held several crappy jobs I hated, but I have always waited. Sometimes finding a new job can take awhile and employers typically ask why you left your old one. It sometimes can give them a negative impression of you if you left before you found a new job.

Ugh i hate the feeling of being in a job that makes you feel that way. i have had two full time jobs in the past that i would dread waking up to go to and when i was there i would literally have to think about surviving the hour because the thought of surviving the day was something i couldn't do.

as others said, it's better to get something else lined up. especially in this economy now who knows when or how long it could take to get another job.

    best of luck to you

What area of the country do you live in and what type of work do you think would suit you better?

Do you think it's unlikely you'd be able to find a job by December? Because that voluntary separation sounds like a dream to me right now haha

I wouldn’t ever quit a job without making sure I have another job lined up. It could take weeks to find a new job even if you’re actively looking while you still have your job currently to lean back on. Working odd jobs most likely won’t cover it and may be hit or miss. I wouldn’t risk it.

I live in NJ and I'm in accounting. I think I'm going to try for something related to the HR field as that interests me more and seems to offer work-life balance that I can handle in the long run. I'm fine with a significant pay cut but I'm nervous I won't be able to find anything anytime soon.

I'm going to try to keep looking and hopefully will be able to find something before I quit.

Just wanted to see if there was anyone else who's been going through the same thing.

That really sucks. I really hope it all works out for you. I know how stressful it can be to hate work. Good luck in whatever choice you choose to make

I've worked in corporate HR and daughter is currently an HR manager for a small company. It is an awesome field, but it can be a tough to get into, and I'd guess in the current job market even more so. Also, it can be REALLY stressful...daughter has been having to research and develop policies on the fly, figure out Covid-19 workplace policies & procedures, manage staffing numbers to ensure they meet PPP loan forgiveness requirements, and deal with the very real human issues of employees' potentially positive tests/possible exposures/homelife crises/etc. Honestly, in the middle of things, I think right now getting started in HR will be significantly more stressful. So if you're looking to make a change right now, I'd research other options too. (My best friend of 40+ years is a CPA; she's a high-level financial exec now, but we were roommates back when she was working her way through the early years at a large accounting firm, so I understand the kind of stress you might be under now. In the short-run, HR will be tough too, if you can even find a position that doesn't require experience.) Good luck!

As others advised, please do not quit your job without a new one line up - especially in this market. I work in HR and what I can tell you is that I, along with almost all of my HR friends have been furloughed since March. I would start applying for new jobs ASAP - the longer you take to start the process, the longer you delay getting hired.

Lol very tempting yes. I’m too afraid to risk it because for the past few months I’ve looked and there’s not many postings and if they are it’s not what I’m looking for. I fear with more companies doing lay offs, the employment won’t be looking too good. I haven’t had a pay raise in 4 years, I stuck it out this long only cuz my job paid for my MBA.

I recently switched jobs! I was a store manager for a Verizon dealer and transitioned into a position with the State of WA. Best thing I ever did!

My husband quit his job 2 months before our wedding and a month before Christmas. Like straight up walked out. It was almost 2 weeks before he found and started a new job. His new job was great with getting a few days off for the wedding and a quick honeymoon.
Everything was mostly paid for. We just had to scale back some little extras.
With you being a year+ out I think if you look for a new job you will be fine. If you’re worried about paying for the wedding just make sure you find one that makes the same or more than your job now.

I'll say this if you set to quit quit if not find something before you actually quit. Also i dont beleive quitting your job is a good idea to do while having plans period. However by next year of course you should have a job...then once you are employed you can plan.
