Has anyone used Couchwedd to have your wedding license notarized remotely instead of waiting in line at a county clerk’s office?

Holly, on August 23, 2020 at 12:39 PM Posted in Planning 2 12
My fiancé and I are anticipating postponing our wedding, but our wedding date is our 10th anniversary and we would love to honor it by signing our marriage license and celebrating our marriage when we can gather safely and plan more easily.
What did you think of Couchwedd?

I’m not familiar with couchwedd, but most services like this cost you way more than doing it yourself. To get our marriage license we had to make an appointment, which is actually kind of nice because waiting in line can take forever at our local office. Is your County clerk’s office doing appointments?

I'd be concerned that it was legal and possibly much more expensive. Some officiants will pick up a license for you for an extra fee. Ask if yours offers that service.

I would have concerns with this being actually legal.

Agreed that this might not be legal. A notary requires you to appear before them in person. They have to physically watch you sign it and then they sign and stamp affirming that they watched you sign it.

Hi guys! I guess I should clarify. The notary is with you in-person (masked and as socially distance as possible, of course!) the service is that the paperwork is packaged and sent to you so you can skip any lines and appointments. When the formalities are completed they get
mailed to the county clerk’s office.

Most things come down to either spending time or money. If its worth it to you to spend money to avoid having to wait in line or make an appointment yourself, that’s why services like this exist. Same with name change services.
In CO, our marriage license costs $30, we have a thirty minute appointment so there’s no waiting in line, and afterwards we plan to have a brunch date to celebrate. Spending $300+ for the convenience of having everything mailed to us just isn’t worth it to us. It also looks like you still have to find a notary, their fee is just to gather the paperwork for you (I could be wrong).

Also, most states require you to appear in person together with government issued IDs to get a marriage license, that may be where the legality concerns come up.

Not sure where you’re getting married but Massachusetts requires you to both be there in person to apply for your marriage license.

This feels really scammy to me. The website is super vague and doesn’t answer any questions to explain how the heck you could get married without a license . Not people I want to be sending all my info too. Really bothered by their FAQ section where the answer to “what exactly is in the kit anyway” is only “simply; everything you need!” 🤔

For us, the only in-person thing was picking up the marriage license and signing it. As mentioned by pp, must states require both parties to appear in-person to get the marriage license. Any officiant should also be able to complete the paperwork / signing portion of it.

We just mailed our completed marriage license back to the State and they mailed us back the final document.

Hi, a friend of mine recommended Couchwedd and I'm thinking about using it for my wedding. While researching I came across this thread by accident. As I understand it's not about obtaining a marriage license since none is needed because there is one state that makes this possible. I remember reading something like that in the faqs on their site. They prepare a filing kit that even includes the court fees as I was told.
