Has anyone used patio heaters for an open area instead of having a tent?

Our venue has a nice back patio that I would like to be the dance floor area, I thought about renting a tent but if it’s over 20x20 I have to get a permit and inspection by the city the day of and I don’t want to deal with that headache the day of my wedding. I’m also nervous 20x20 may be too small to have everyone in a tent for the dance floor. I was thinking about renting a couple patio heaters to put back there but would that be a waste? Our wedding is in October and sometimes the weather is perfect and other times it’s pretty chilly. I’m guessing it’ll be around 45-50 degrees at night. Here are a couple pictures of the back patio I would like to keep open if I can.Has anyone used patio heaters for an open area instead of having a tent? 1

Have been to outdoor weddings and other events that didn’t have a tent in sight and they were not missed unless it was functional to provide shade. Heaters are very command do their job. A tent will not do anything to provide heat if it really is 40something degrees which is bordering on freezing and too cold for an outdoor event. Guests also don’t need a tent to be able to dance or socialize and you can save thousands of dollars by skipping it.

A lot of the factors here depend on where you live. Is there a possibility for snow or rain? If so, a tent would definitely be needed. In my experience, space heaters work great if you're standing directly next to it. They will not heat a large outdoor area in 45-degree weather.

If you 100% plan on using the back space I think you should have a tent (unless you live somewhere like AZ that it really doesn't rain but even there... these days you never know).

I completely agree with Rae. I am a huge fan of cool weather, but a space heater isn't going to cut it if it's 45 degrees out. Those heaters are great for sitting right under them, but they aren't going to heat a large outdoor space. I'd either just stick to having everything inside, or rent a heated tent for the outdoor area.

You'll need to have a back up plan in case it rains or is very cold. A tent will keep heat in better.
