Have anyone used $2.97 Oakleaf wine from Walmart?

AnticipatingAugust2011, on January 25, 2011 at 9:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

Walmart has wine for $2.97/bottle in various flavors. I am strongly considering but about 4 cases. Have any purchased/served it at the reception? Have anyone tasted it?

The zinfandel is not the greatest but it is ok, serve very very chilled, buy 1 bottle and try it.

I can honestly say no, I have not. But, as someone who is in the wine business, if the wine is only $2.97, it is not something 99% of people will enjoy.

Walnart doesn't sell alcohol in my state, but sorry no I've never tasted it. I didn't even know that you could get wine for under $3. That's the same price as cider. I suggest you buy a bottle and taste it. If you like it, chances are your guests will like it.

I have a bottle of the white sin in my fridge and its a funky color so im scared to try it.. I got a different kind (forget the name).. from Walmart for like $2.99 though, and it wasn't bad, and I am picky with wine... I mean it obviously wasn't a $50 bottle, but if I was served that at a wedding, then i would drink it and not know it cost less than $3 a bottle

You don't have to go nuts with wine, but 2.99 wine is going to taste like.......well.....2.99 wine. Maybe you could buy a whole bunch of white and red and make sangria out of it for the wedding? But straight.....probably not.

I had it, only if I want to buy a cheap bottle, but go to a wine rack store. I know VA have them and some other areas. They will help with you to pick out your wines and help you understand etc. Not only that they know how much wine to get for accordling to how many people. Also they have big bottles of wine etc. Sorry I am a wine lover.

Same here... no alcohol in our Wal Mart. But you can get some really good wine for that cheap. Recently bought a bottle of white zin and paid only 2.50 for it. It was fairly good. On other hand, I've also bought wines for upwards of $20-25 per bottle and not so great.

@ Anticipating - check with your vendor first. We wanted to purchase wine for our reception, but our vendor would have had to do it for us for insurance/legal purposes.

I'm with Celia - I make sangria all the time because you can use cheap wine for it. But straight up might be bad.

Is there a Trader Joe's in your area? They have a wine called Charles Shaw ("Three Buck Chuck") that is $3 and drinkable.

Thanks ladies! I am not a big wine drinker at all. I like champagne/mixed drinks/beer so I may just check into that. I just wanted to give the wine drinks something to sip on. With so many areas that I do have to spend a whole lot of money on - the alcohol was not going to be one of them. I am going to take all the comments into consideration. (They make this wedding stuff look so easy on tv)

Someone on this board or on The Knot knew a caterer for the Academy Awards. She said they serve Oak Leaf and charge $8 a glass.

You can't go by price. You must taste it. I saw a couple of signs on the display at Walmart and I believe that they had 87 points from wine spectator but you need to check. It is also all what you like.

It is well documented in marketing literature that some people will think something is not as good because of the price. If it costs more, they automatically think more of it.

Suggest you buy a red, a white and a zinfandel. You will be out a whole $9. Try it and see if you like it. If you don't trust yourselves, cover up the label and ask your friends what they think.

I have had lots of expensive wine that just wasn't as good tasting - at least to me - as some less expensive wines.

You probably know your guests best. For me, I think some of the Oakleaf wine is very drinkable, and some I didn't care for. Same for Charles Shaw....really depends on what you like...expensive isn't always better....some cheap wine tastes good to me, and some doesn't. Same with expensive. In the end the wine people probably won't know that you got it at Walmart and will just be happy to have something to sip. Like P M. said, buy one bottle of each, and have some friends over. Don't tell them how much it cost. And if you have a wine snob or two in the group, oh well....they will live....Smiley smile

The best advice you've got is..."Try it first" If it tastes good to you, it doesn't matter how much it costs. Price is not a reflection of taste or quality. Some of the best wines I've tasted were under 10.00 a bottle. And...some of the worst...have been 5X the price! It's really a matter of personal taste. No one needs to know what you paid for your wine...except ya know...each other! lol

I have to say I was skeptical. I bought three different varieties for cooking, but I had to also taste them. The Pinot Grigio is surprisingly good, and I can see how it garnered its awards. It's complex and effervescent and very pleasing. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is also nice, with clean finishes. A lot of the cheaper reds make me gag from the aftertaste, but these are, again, exceptional for the price. I have fooled a few people already with these wines. Sure, they're not Rombauer, or Neyers, or Chateau Lafite Rothschild, but then again, they are nowhere near the price. I would recommend them for drinking as well as cooking. After all, never cook with a wine you wouldn't also drink.

    Oh, and I'm a sommelier.

The merlot is surprisingly good (amazingly good for 2.77 at wal-mart). i really do not think anyone would complain at a wedding reception. what's to complain about? it is cheap but its very drinkable. live love and enjoy

The Moscato bad for 3 dollars and the cabrinet isn't bad for 3 dollars. As for the others I'm not sure. For 3 bucks the cabrinet and the moscato are actually pretty decent.

It's not bad for cheap wine. I like the cab and merlot. However, I typically use them for sangria.
