Have people been able to change their last names during coronavirus?

The Sealpups, on April 3, 2020 at 9:48 PM Posted in Married Life 0 10
I got married last September and was just starting to change my name earlier this year but with the virus going on, I’m not sure what to do. My passport expires in October- we were planning to go on our honeymoon overseas (June) but it may be delayed.

I’m not even sure where to start or if I can still do it. I was told to start with the social security office first and then do the passport. Is there a fee with changing your name too?

Changing your name with social security is free. For the passport, you have to pay for the fee of a new passport. It is only free if you change it within the 1st year of getting the passport.

I too got married last September and I already changed my name on my SS and it was free. I also got my new passport, (you will be have to send a copy of marriage certificate). Did my license and ID also right after my SS card. Also don’t forget your voters card! Hope this helps.

I haven’t changed my name yet either. Our social security offices and DMV offices are closed so there’s nothing I can do at this point.

I got married in October and changed my name shortly after, but it was free minus the DMV & passport fees. You will have to start at the social security office, and that is free. Just make sure you have a copy to your marriage license (in my state they require a certified copy). You may have to mail all of your paperwork in during the shutdown.

The US has temporarily suspended issuing passports. That said, you won’t be able to travel with an expired passport. You may want to look at pushing back your trip. Otherwise you’ve just got to wait and see if you can pay to expedite your passport renewal when the country is issuing passports again. You can your name on the passport within 12 months of your renewed passport issue date and it can be done free of charge. If you think you can change your name with social security quickly, you can try to renew the passport in your new name once the passport offices open back up. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnn.com/travel/amp/us-passport-emergencies/index.html

I sent in my SSN request form with our marriage certificate. This can be done through the mail. This may be the only step we can mark off the list because everything else is closed.

I second what Rachel said about possibly postponing. You'll want to look at the immigration laws of the country you were planning on traveling to. Most countries require at least 6 months before the expiration date on your passport to enter their country. If you're unable to get a new passport before your trip unfortunately you might not have enough time left before it expires

I am in the same boat! We got married in January and I wanted to have all the name change taken care of before we take out a mortgage together, just so everything is clean.

SS offices are closed here in GA. You can mail in your application, but they do not accept photocopies or notarized copies of your form of ID. So i would have to mail in my actual driver’s license. My passport is expired, so I don’t think that would be valid ID.
I feel a little comfortable mailing in my license without knowing when or if I’d get it back. Might just have to be on standby.
