Have you received your marriage certificate??

Ashley, on December 18, 2020 at 4:47 PM Posted in Married Life 0 14
We were married on October 24th and here it is 12/18 and I still have not received my marriage certificate in the mail. It's so frustrating. I can't change my name until I get it. We have wedding gifts that were made out to me and my husband that we can't deposit because of the name. I am in Ga. Has anyone else had this problem?

Were you supposed to get one in the mail? In my state, you have to order and pay for them once it’s been registered in the system.

I don't know what the system is like where you are, but in my city, marriage certificates are not automatically mailed out. We had to order one from the clerk's office and pay to get our copy.

Can you call and ask about it? I’m in a different state and was married pre-covid, but I got mine ours back 2-3 weeks later.

Yes. So, my officiant was supposed to sign our license and mail it to probate court. He signed it on the day of our wedding, but gave it to my parents. My husband and I left the next day for our honeymoon so my parents had it for the week we were away. When we got back, I took it to probate court and confirmed they would send certified copies to our home. That was 11/2

I’m in TN and was married 11/07 and we got ours two weeks later. Married on Saturday, the officiant mailed it on Tuesday. So it took a week and a half, but yes we got ours. Maybe call and see? Hopefully it’s just on its way with the holidays being so busy at the post office!

I got married on the same day and received mine two weeks later. I live in Eastern Pennsylvania. I would call it's been way too long!

No. I don't plan on changing my last name and I let loved ones know that. I doubt I'll receive checks in FH's last name.

Everything's backed up because of the problems with the post office.

I would reach out to your local clerk, though, just to check.

That said, I didn't change my name, and still got checks in DH's name. I endorsed them in front of a teller, and DH did, too, and they deposited them, no problem.

Just some unsolicited advice: it is still a good idea to get a copy of your marriage certificate because you may need it for other purposes. For example, if you ever want to go on your spouse's health insurance plan, you will likely need to provide a copy of your marriage certificate. I didn't change my last name but we've already had to use ours: while I kept my own health insurance, my husband needed to provide a copy of the marriage certificate in order to add me to his life insurance through work. It is definitely a good idea to get, even if you don't think you'll need it for some time

I went into the county registrar's office 2 weeks after we got married and picked up our copies. I would definitely call them or go into the office to check to see why you still haven't received your certificate.

I contacted our court (married on October 2nd) and evidently I forgot to include a post stamped return envelope 🤷‍♀️. Glad I called.

Is this office open for you to go in person?

We got married out of state (NC) and specifically asked if they could send our marriage license and copies to our DC address and they said no problem! About a month later I realized we still hadn't received them and we gave the same office a call and they said we had to pick them up in person. 🤷‍♀️ So my husband made a trip and got them for us!
