Having 2 "weddings" one being a blessing - can i wear my dress again?

Megan, on October 11, 2019 at 10:18 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 3

Background: I just moved out of state to be closer to my fiance. We're getting married in the Catholic church in his state because he has a disabled family member that can't travel. But I don't want my family traveling halfway across the country so I'm having a separate Mass back home. I know it's not the same as the sacrament, but I wanted it to be similar.

I didn't think it would be a big deal, but the priest at my home church told me that I "can only get married once" and that I can't walk down the aisle again, as an example. I still have a lot of questions for him that I need to clarify. It left me feeling discouraged. He said it would be an anniversary Mass. I'm afraid to ask if I can wear my wedding dress. I'm afraid he'll say no. Can he tell me what to wear? I was caught very off guard.

Has anyone been through a similar situation? Thanks so much!

I don't see why you couldn't wear your dress again. I understand that it won't be a wedding but what you wear shouldn't matter. Since you'll already have been married in the Catholic church is doing the second one in a different place an option? I completely get wanting your family see you get married in church but it's also important that you be happy with how that ceremony goes.

You can absolutely wear your dress again and I think he means you can only get married once as a sacrament.

I'm sort of getting married twice too. We’re doing a Catholic mass and sacrament a week prior to what what my priest calls our public wedding. Im choosing to wear my bridal shower dress again for the sacrament and save the wedding dress for the first look.

Don’t let the priest get in your head. It’s your blessing, wear what you want, walk down that isle and enjoy every moment!

    Hey there, Megan Smiley smile

I think it’s really sweet that you’re planning something at home so none of your family miss out on the celebrations.

I don’t believe there will be any issues wearing your dress, however, it may be best to confirm this with the priest.
