Having a dj at the wedding worth it?

Veronica, on November 1, 2019 at 4:21 PM

Hey everyone! So, I am in the planning process right now. I am having mixed feelings about hiring a Dj. Is it worth spending 1,000$ Or more on a DJ to play music at my wedding. Let me know your thoughts?

I think it depends on what's a top priority for you. I love dancing and want a lit dance floor so I decided to go with a DJ to help get the party started.

If that's not as important to you then dont hire a DJ and put the money towards something that is higher on your list.

Also if you have a fun crowd of friends, a good carefully curated playlist and booze flowing people will have fun and dance no matter what Smiley smile

It depends on the kind of reception you want to have. If you want people to dance, I'd definitely recommend having a DJ, and a good one can also keep track of the schedule and make sure different reception events ( like special dances, bouquet toss, etc...) take place when they're supposed to. If that isn't important to you, it's not as necessary. We're having a small, simple reception at a park shelter in Estes Park, so we're planning on using speakers and a laptop with a pre-made playlist, and that'll work perfectly for the reception we're planning to have.

Ultimately it's up to you. I've been to a wedding where the bride and groom created a playlist for the entire night and it didn't work great, IMO, because people didn't dance. From my experience, a DJ can read a crowd, easily change music to get people on the dance floor, and make important announcements throughout the reception (i.e., sign the guestbook, dessert bar is open, go outside for sparkler exit). I gave up a photobooth to have a DJ with an uplighting package at my reception, because it was important to me that the ambiance was just right.

Yup, the cheapest package I found was 1,100 plus the dance floor is almost 2,000.

I have worked hundreds of weddings and several without DJs. I will say that having one ensures that your timeline will stay on course. If the DJ doesn’t manage the timeline, don’t hire them! They are the person keeping the events moving. if you don’t have a coordinator, the DJ is the only other person who will make sure your events are flowing.

I'm sorry but this is a silly question.
If you want to dance and have fun, you'll definitely want one. It'll be bland and boring without one.
Yes they can be expensive but think about it, they're preparing a custom playlist for your wedding plus you're paying for their time there.
Yes a DJ is 1000% worth it

Definitely recommend looking for a cheaper DJ! $1,000 is quite a bit for a DJ - we are having a family friend to it for under $500, and that includes speakers at the outdoor ceremony.

We have hired a DJ. They will be playing the music for our ceremony as well as our reception for just under $1000. For everything included in their package (lighting, microphone for ceremony, etc.) I definitely think it was money well spent.

We just went to a wedding where they had a playlist hooked up through the sound system, and no one danced. If you want people to dance, I def recommend hiring a DJ. As others have said, they will also MC and announce all of your big events - intro, first dance, family dances, etc.

I think it really depends on what you're going for. My husband's groomsman got married a few months before us & they skipped the DJ. Instead they just made a playlist on their phone, hooked it up to the sound system, & hit shuffle. Sure, there were some songs that ended up repeating, but we still had a good time & there were plenty of people on the dance floor.

At our wedding, we had a DJ & I think we had just as much fun & just as many people on the dance floor, the only difference was that our DJ also announced when it was time for things like our 1st dance, cutting the cake, last call at the bar, etc. However, the groomsman's wedding just assigned that task to someone else. It really just depends on if you want to spend the money & if you have dependable people to fill in where needed. You can have really have fun w/ either option.

I didn't think it was a really big deal, but my future MIL said that if I wanted people to dance and want someone to help get everyone up and having a good time, she said YES a DJ is a must. I know they're expensive but it will be worth it during the reception Smiley smile

My initial answer is “yes… It’s worth it”. However, it also depends on what type of reception you want. If you just want background music and there won’t be any dancing,...then you can probably use a music list on your phone. But if you’re trying to create more of an upbeat dance environment. then a DJ is best for that. They can mix the songs in smoothly, make adjustments to the music based on crowd response and also make announcements as needed to keep the evening flowing.

Wow really?! I would kill for a $1000 DJ right now. All of the packages we found were more like $2000+ including the dance floor... I searched and searched for a better deal and found someone to do it for $1600. I jumped on that and paid 50% down and now they have disappeared😳 I should have just paid the $2000. I'm already searching for a new one and we may be out $800.

Yes a DJ is totally worth it! But $1,000 is way too much! I don’t know where you are located, but i found some who quoted me $500
We went with someone my husband used to work with. He does it on the side. We paid less than $400

I got very lucky with my venue. I don't need a DJ, and quite frankly the reception space is too small and imo, it would look awkward if I did have one. So we are using some sort of AUX plug in, so we will have our own playlist going Smiley heart I would not be spending money on a DJ unless I absolutely had to. But it's 2019, so it's probably easy to get a plug in anywhere you're at as long as the venue allows it. Smiley smile

So my venue provides a contracted DJ. However, I want an MC not just a DJ. We went back and forth about spending the money (about $800) but my FH reminded me to focus on the aspects of the wedding that mean the absolute most to me. This is one of them. We can’t vet the contracted DJ beforehand. I’ve also heard of the nightmare person who mispronounces the names. Music choices not the greatest etc. I want a more personal experience. So I am scaling back my cake ideas and spending the money on the DJ. I say do it based on how important the party portion of the wedding is to you!
