Hawaii in December

Katie, on August 17, 2017 at 3:06 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 18

We're going on our honeymoon in December so I am able to finish the semester out. But my question is (for people who have gone during this time) how is the weather and what did you pack?

It rains a lot. So I'd pack some umbrellas and some rain boots.

It may or may not rain but if it rains, it's not heavy enough for a rain coat and/or rain boots. Seriously, a light rain jacket if anything and there are stores here that sell cheap umbrellas so I wouldn't bring one because you may not need it.

I wear shorts, tank tops, and slippers here year round and use my rain boots maybe twice a year (really not even necessary and definitely not common here but I just like how cute they look). Dress comfortably, light, and at the most maybe a sweatshirt. But depending on where you're from, if it snows, you may not think it gets cold enough here to even need the sweatshirt.

ETA: UNLESS you plan on going to Maui and driving up to Haleakala... that's a whole 'nother story for what to wear!

Which island are you visiting? Some of them have weather requiring a thick hoodie ie volcanos park or ranch country on big island.

I'd pack mostly shorts bathing suits and t shirts with one pair of pants, one dress and a hoodie as mentioned earlier. Light jacket. That's about it.

^^ Yes I agree with Jacks. It depends what island you're visiting and what your activities are.

You may also want to bring a pair of hiking shoes. And you don't even really need the hard core kind if you're not planning on doing any crazy hikes as an avid hiker. A pair of sneakers that you don't care if it gets muddy should be good.

^Hiking shoes is a good idea, particularly on Kauai^

I wore jeans/shorts and tank tops mostly, but there were a couple days it was a bit cooler, and the evenings got cool.

I wonder what Hawaii Brittney went to? You won't need umbrellas or rain boots.

December is prime vacation time for western Canadians to go to Hawaii for the sun and warmth!

Although they do get rain, it's usually in the form of showers that are not long lasting. We usually just duck for cover for a couple of minutes and it's over.

If you do get rain, you can buy an umbrella at any one of hundreds of corner ABC stores.

I haven't been in December, but I went in the end of October. It was beautiful, perfect weather. I know December is very popular for Hawaii. I bet you can check the weather the last couple years to get an idea.

Hanauma Bay is great if you're a beginning snorkeller. From Waikiki you can get there fast/easy on the #22 bus. Go early, or the bus and the beach will be crowded.

On the North Shore try some shrimp from Giovanni's shrimp truck. Have drinks and a snorkel at Turtle Bay Resort. Parking is free and plentiful. I recommend a car for going to the North Shore, day rentals are pretty easy.

For a really kitschy touristy thing to do try "Dukes Bar and Grill" at around 4 on Sundays. It's located at the Outrigger Beach hotel. Jimmy Buffet wrote a song about it called "Dukes on Sunday". There's live music and dancing on the beach patio.

I could go on...I love it there.

It really does rain a lot. Still humid and warm but you could easily get rain everyday. I swam in the rain and had no problems with that lol.

Rain blows through uber fast because of the tradewinds usually. A shower may last 5-10 min then it's like it never happened.

I've literally never seen someone use an umbrella in Hawaii anywhere except maybe at the volcano on Big Island. The winds would blow it inside out in two seconds.

My suggestion is to stay in the southern end of wherever you decide to visit-- weather tends to be warmer than the north and less chance of rain
