Hay Bales for decorating and barn sitting.

Aleksandra, on July 28, 2015 at 11:06 AM Posted in Style and Décor 1 20

Ladies have any of you had hay bales used for sitting? I'm planning on putting them here and there for cute little rest stops. Have you rented it or bought it? What did you use to cover them with? I'm in Greenwich CT and struggling to find farm that would rent some to me.

Please no. They are not cheap and no matter what you cover them with they are dirty and poke you. There are no backs so it's very uncomfortable.

Bear in mind that hay is a common allergen and some people may have to leave your wedding if you have hay there.

I went to a cousin's wedding that had hay bales set out for the ceremony. The wedding was on their horse property, so it fit in with the decor. Only thing I'd say is please please please put blankets, pillows, etc. down on it for comfort! My cousins did not, and it was very itchy and not comfortable. I think with blankets/pillows they would have been just fine though. I don't know if they bought or rented though.

My cousin had her rustic wedding on my mom's farm. We borrowed hay bales from the neighbor who is a farmer. So the issues with hay is that you cant leave it out overnight and it has to be picked up quickly or else it will get dew/moisture on it and it will be ruined. The neighbor, my step dad, DH and the other GM's had to set up the hay right before the ceremony and then throw them back on the wagon immediately after the wedding. She used laces sheets to cover the hay but it is still hay and it is uncomfortable. The sheets were blowing around, hay was all over the place. All the men were sweaty from loading up hay. She needed 75 bales for 130 guests.

I dont recommend it after experiencing it. If you do rent them please make sure that the people you are renting them from are willing to do set up and take down cause your bridal party does not want to do this.

Most places don't rent them you have to purchase them they are about $4 a piece here in Ohio. If you are set on using them make sure you cover with something substantial as the other posters stated the hay does poke through.

    I wouldn't use them.

they aren't going to rent hay to you because i don't think that they would be able to sell it afterwards, also many of the bales you have for your pictures are straw, hay is for feed most of the time.

You can rent hay bales? Is that a thing? I mean, you can find cheap ones, but you'll need large ones.

But just a thought: I went out to feed our goats two flakes of hay this morning from a bale. I stabbed myself with hay so badly I had to use tweezers.

I think it looks cute but seriously sucks for the people sitting on them. As much as I want that country rustic wedding including haybales I will not subject my guests to sitting on them. I'm going to attend 2 weddings in the next month that are having them and I probably won't sit to be honest. They are itchy and they poke you. Not fun.

This sounds like a terrible (and terribly uncomfortable) idea. If you want to use them as decor, fill your hat, but proper seating should be provided.

The one thing I will say is that older folks and even younger folks with back problems may not be able to sit on them for very long so I wouldn't advise having them for anywhere guests will have to sit for long. For example, though you wouldn't know it, I have severe scoliosis and I can't sit on anything without a back (as someone mentioned about them above) for more than about 5 minutes without being in real pain. I could stand for much longer than I could sit on a hay bale! Also, no matter what you cover them with they are pokey and scratchy. This is bad for everyone but esp women because they may have on clothes that don't cover their legs.

They can be cute, but I don't think they can be comfortable.

I use hay bales in an event I throw every year. It's a giant pain in the ass but we need them. You can create backs by stacking them like blocks... but it really is a giant mess.

I've experienced this at parties. They aren't cheap, not comfortable, they poke you and they make for one REALLY BIG clean up mess!!!

I have been to a wedding where there were hay bales and they did not cover them. I have a hay allergy... without even thinking I sat down and my legs instantly started getting hives, I had to leave before the bride even came down the aisle I was so itchy.

Have you worked with hay? Most people have to wear gloves, long sleeves and trousers when putting hay into stalls. Also, in the baling process small animals and reptiles can get caught in the baler and therefore in the bales.

Bales of hay are stinky, itchy and a common allergen. Please reconsider. Yes they look pretty, but they are uncomfortable as hell!

I would use straw over hay. Straw is lighter, cheaper, and has less allergens I've found from my experience from taking care of horses. Just make you cover them well and maybe have a few real chairs for older guests.
