Hayley Paige getting “brittney Spears’ed” !?!😱

Ava, on March 8, 2021 at 1:28 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 14

Has anyone else seen this?! Apparently Haley Paige resigned from her parent company, and they have retaliated by taking her to court and suing her for HER OWN NAME! She literally cannot use her own name in any sort of business, bridal or not. They have taken control of all her social media accounts!

I heard about this on a podcast but didn't realize it was for HER NAME!! Apparently it was something about her "using her name as if she were a social media influencer" and not crediting the company she signed with in 2011? All so insane! I'm obsessed with Hayley Paige

So crazy that we live in a world where your former employer can actually seize control of your personal social media accounts and your own name! Not sure if the link worked or not, but she explains everything in a video on her new Instagram page (Allthatglittersonthegram), where she is actually taking suggestions for a new name! I couldn’t even imagine having to go through all that!

That's absurd, honestly. I guess with her brand name being her legal name, they are trying to gain control over the brand, but in turn literally taking away the rights to this girl's name! Which shouldn't even be doable, in my opinion! But I'm sure there will be time in court!

I really hope she has a good lawyer and her former employer gets their butt handed to them.

Agreed! She seems like such a beautiful person on the inside! I couldn’t imagine working and hustling that hard at such a young age to become the level of success she is, just to have a former employer try to steal it out from under you! They obviously know they will not be successful without her, and are trying to cash in, in whatever shady underhanded way they can. So sad.

Sadly, that’s a problem with using your personal name as your company name. If you sell/leave the company, the name stays with the new owner. 😕

I looked into this, and I have to agree with PP, that's the downside of using your personal name in a business capacity. This is also why a lot of people use pseudonyms and DBAs.

Unfortunately, JLM is correct. "Hayley Paige" may be her name, but it is also one of their dress labels. And her Instagram was, indeed, being used in a business capacity, not as a private/personal Instagram. Unless she signed contracts that explicitly stated that she retains the rights to the name in a business capacity (which it would appear she didn't), the company has the legal rights to the name and the business account.

Same thing happens every day when businesses are sold. One of my BILs had a company for decades that was "[His] [Name] Air & Heat" and when he sold the company, the new owners also got the name. So there is a company out there, "[His] [Name] Air & Heat", and he doesn't even own it anymore. Customers who are loyal to a business or brand don't adjust well to name changes, and all of the legacy of the name vanishes if they get rid of it.

It's a bit of a gamble on JLM's part, because there will be people who just think this is wrong and will not purchase from JLM at all as a result.

But, technically, this was a risk Hayley accepted when using her name in a business capacity.

I’ve been keeping tabs on this whole situation and the latest I’ve heard now is that the judge in this case ruled in favor of JLM, so now Hayley has to create an entirely new name for her bridal line and pretty much start from scratch. I’m so bummed for her! The good news is that she has a strong support system and people behind her, so she will come back from this!
