Heel height and wedding dress hemming - front bustle? Pics?

Katherine, on December 14, 2015 at 2:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

The title says it all. I have ceremony heels and reception flats, and I don't want to trip on my dress. I've heard some people split the difference, or even remove their under slip (though that would add length), or even add a front bustle. Does anyone have pics of their shoes showing under their dress if they split the difference on the hem? Or, does anyone have pics of a front bustle? How did it work out? I dance like an animal so this is important. Thanks

My bridal salon recommended pick one show for the night. If you wear heels for the ceremony, you will trip on the hem when you go to flats. Everyone thinks it's a great idea to switch shoes, but your dress ends up being a hassle. I'm wearing flats all day because it's important to me to be comfortable.

Following. I'm a petite bride and don't want to wear heels all night.

How high are your heels for the ceremony?

I'm in the short camp and was going to wear heels then switch to flats, but that hem and bustle would have been a nightmare. I ended up wearing wedges and wore them the whole time and wasn't uncomfortable. Maybe try that since they are more comfortable than regular heels?

Awesome! Do you have a picture of your dress with the wedges, since it was hemmed with flats?

I'm not even gonna lie- I'm wearing flats all day because I have no desire to a) trip down cobblestone steps and B) don't want my feet aching from high heels and my high arch. So yeah, flats all day. It sucks cause I'm already so short but oh well. Following anyway.

I wore 2.5 inch heals and switched into flats later and had no problems (and I danced A LOT). I had a back bustle. If you have a higher heel it might be an issue though.

As an Alts CSR at David's bridal, if you want to switch shoes you can get away with around 2-2.5 inches. Anything above that usually causes problems

The Danskos are comfy, but they rub on the top of my foot a bit. The Toms are pretty comfy and so are the Jessica Simpsons. None of them are exactly perfect, but they're pretty good. I just don't want to be hooked into wearing one pair for the whole night, since the Dansko's may be heavy for dancing.

Yeah, I was already tripping on my dress because the alterations lady wants it to be long to the floor, but it's not functional. :/

If anyone has pics of having their dress hemmed with flats and then wearing heels, that would be great! I would love to see them!

I wore 2 inch wedges under my dress. I switched to slippers for the reception. I really had no problems. A slight issue with our first dance ( a rumba type dance ) but I honestly think it was more an issue with how big the skirt was. DH was stepping on it.

It was important to me that my hem hit the floor and not gap. I ended up keeping my shoes on all night, but I didn't care and my feet didn't hurt. Wine helped alot with that.

I will be staying in my heels, and will be having wine to make my feet pain-resistant.

I'm wearing shoes with an ankle strap though, and a big heel (vintage style shoes). So they won't be as perilous as stiletto pumps for example.

I can't even imagine the nightmare that would be walking in my dress too long. Actually yes I can, as it was finally just hemmed and I could actually move for the first time since purchasing the dress.

Adding one more to show that my hem actually pretty much did hit the floor. Lol I don't know why my feet are showing so much in that one pic

This is such a great topic! I didn't even think about this. I plan on wearing higher heels since me and FH have a 15 inch height gap! I wanted to wear heels then switch the flip flops. But now I may have to reconsider...
