HELP! Adding Sleeves to a gown.

Amanda, on September 28, 2017 at 12:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

Hi everyone. I have begun to look for my wedding gown (looking for a ballgown style dress), which is proving to be very stressful. I am looking for something modest, but not Duggar-ish and I am more than willing to alter the right dress. however, I feel like I need to know all the options that might be available.

Does adding sleeves really depend on the dress?

I know I could get a bolero, but I don't like the way those look on me when they sit over the dress (at least the few I've put on). Would it be possible to sew a bolero into a gown, sot that I still get the look of sleeves without a weird cut off point on the dress? The boleros always seem to hit at an odd spot on my body. I am a curvy size 8/10, and my hips are just a little wider than my upper body... I'm usually confident enough in my appearance, but this has me feeling so self-conscious and insecure. Please send suggestions! Thank you...

I'm sure a good seamstress would be able to add sleeves on your gown. Could you post a picture of it?

Sleeves can be added to pretty much any dress. When my daughter was looking at dresses, the bridal shops had sleeves for her to try on with the sleeveless gowns to get an idea what they would look like. She did end up finding a beautiful ball gown that already had sleeves. Have you been out looking yet?

I am wearing a full ballgown and it came with the option of straps or sleeves. You could look into a dress topper? Take a peek at BHLDN's website..they have gorgeous toppers and capelets.

I e seen ball gown dresses with sleeves already they have them it took my 3 month to find my dress and 16 weeks to have it made this Friday I'm going for my first try. Look online they are a lot of them. Set your budget they can be a little pricey. Good luck

    Like what @sarah said

check out BHLDN (I bought my gown from them). Their capelets/toppers cost a little more but it will give you an idea and I think Etsy sells those too. Here are 2 samples:

If you haven't gotten your dress yet, this is mine. It comes with the option of straps or sleeves. It is very flattering on someone with curves.

Thank you, all! I think my best bet is going to be to find a good seamstress, or just try some more boleros, or capelets. Smiley smile Still have 7 months to go, so I will find one soon enough... hopefully. Smiley laugh

@Sarah, yes That dress with sleeves is just beautiful. I considered that one, but haven't been able to find a store that carries it. Plus, I really need something that goes straight across rather than a "sweetheart" neckline.

@oliviap that essense of australia gown is beautiful. I would have to add something to change the neckline, though. :-/

@Ariadne, I had not heard of them until now. Thanks! It looks like some of their dresses might be carried at the local shop I have an appointment at a week from Saturday.

A good seamstress can add sleeves to basically any dress you want!! I saw quite a few ballgown dresses with sleeves so keep looking but if not, you can add them!

I second the Essense of Australia gown. That's my dress, and I tried it on with a lace bolero and it gave a lot of coverage. I decided to go without the bolero, but I think it would definitely achieve what you're wanting. The cut might seem low, but the bolero does a lot to mute that. (Of note, this dress is an A-line, not a ballgown. Just in case you're looking for a true ballgown.)

Look at 9366 by allure. One of the most beautiful ballgowns I've ever seen, and you can build up the top to make the neckline more modest.

@Tabets Wifey, I am hoping that is the case, but I've tried on so many dresses at two different stores, and when I ask about adding sleeves both consultants I've seen just look at me like I'm crazy, or they only want to try a bolero. Maybe it's just the dresses I'm picking, but I can't imagine it that would be the case for EVERY dress I've picked. If I can't find a dress with sleeves, should I just try to find a professional seamstress outside of the bridal shop?

    Thanks, ladies.

    @Kira, that one is beautiful!
