Help!!! Breach of contract?!

Kiah, on March 15, 2019 at 9:12 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 38
Hi everyone. So I’m getting married in two weeks at the literal venue of my dreams.. huge winery and resort, vineyard.. it literally spooks like a castle, And if you’re from Atlanta you probably know what venue I’m talking about. So last night, I get a call from my wedding coordinator and she informs me that for the wedding, my bathrooms will be out of order and my guess will have to use a “executive level portable bathroom” I.e. a porta potty.
I have spent quite a bit of money on this venue, literally almost $20,000 for my guest to use a portable bathroom. I understandably was upset about this and contact them and let them know I was not only not OK with it, but I’m very upset that they didn’t let me know when I signed my contract that the bathroom will be going through a remodel during my wedding.
The contract states if the hotel or I have to change venues/times/facilities I’m entitled to receive $15,500. While I technically don’t have to change facilities; another ballroom was offered to me; plus I’m assured they’ll “try to make it right” by offering some sort of discount. My question to you fellow brides is WHAT WOULD YOU DO?! A ballroom kinda ruins my whole vision.. and I fear all the decor will look smushed in due to a way smaller room. Would you ask for all your money back?! Half? Would you take them to court?! Any advice would be helpful!

I have seen some pretty nice portable potties before. It was at a brewery and it had multiple stalls, running water sinks and was kind of fancy. I am sorry they did that to you. Did they have a leak or some sort of renovation?

Some of the executive porta potty’s are really nice they are not what you would see at a construction site they use them here in California for all movie premieres and events. I would see what porta potty’s they are offering and if you can stay st that venue and ask for a partial refund . It would be less stress than trying to advise everyone of a new venue and not having the vision you want

I would try to take whatever discount they’ll give you, and just roll with it! I feel like a venue as nice as the one you’re describing would probably have VERY nice portable bathrooms... probably not the “portapotty” you’re picturing lol. Can you ask to see it beforehand to make your decision?

I agree with everyone else. Set up an appointment to go see them and see what discount they can do to keep you in the location you want.

See what portable bathrooms will look like first, then make a decision whether to stay in your current venue or take the ballroom they’re offering. In either case be firm with them & request to get reimbursed for 30-40% of the fee (which I think is reasonable, because your contract doesn’t really cover you for this case of portable bathrooms, based on what you described).
Whatever you do, do not go the court route. You’ll waste bunch of money, time & stress & turn something as exciting as your wedding day into a sour memory of a court battle. At the end, it will not be worth the extra money you may (or may not) get.

My sister had an outdoor wedding last summer and had to rent one of those portable bathroom and it was actually very nice, it was a small trailer type thing but it had a full bathroom with 3 stalls working sinks and toilets and full length mirrors it honestly looked like a typical bathroom in a fancy restaurant. You wouldn't know it was portable if you didn't see it from the outside so I know it's discouraging but I'm sure it will be fine!

Looked similar to this but a bit bigger and the mirrors were full length.

I agree. See what type they are offering. Surely these people know their clientele will not use anything less than upscale. I've worked on movie sets and I'm not a " porta potty" person. These were for the stars and I was a body double so I got to use theirs. Really nice. Was a real bathroom. Not what they put out for parades or at huge NYE functions. I pray you have the most perfect day!!

I’d ask to see what their portapotties look like but still request at least a 50% refund of what your total was to be. They’re not providing you with the space/facilities they promised you. I’d ask for 50% or go to court. Hopefully they’ll agree to that and avoid legal issues.

    Hey everyone!
I’ve seen the bathrooms, and while they’re nice, my guests are going to have to walk outside the reception venue to use the bathrooms. If it rains? They’re still walking out there. Also I’m imagining a big bathroom trailer in the background of my photos...

I agree with others posted. The bathrooms will be a pain but will hopefully look nice. I would see what they’re willing to offer and get a number in mind that you will except. If you can negotiate that $15k in their contract do just that. Even if some of it isn’t a refund and is in some form of a large refund along with some upgrades.

Calm down. I know this can be upsetting. See what kind of discounts they are offering and what kind of "executive" porta potty they're offering and go from there....

Try to get the venue to put greenery or something to block them, if possible. Also use this as a negotiation point. If you have a talented photographer, and I'm sure you do, tell them in advance. You'd be amazed the angles they can shoot to avoid eyesores. Also, the venue needs to provide awnings, or something, in case it rains. You can't afford to get soaked in your wedding gown. Keep us updated, please.

    Honestly,
    Id roll with it....
I'm at an age that I just don't sweat things like I did in my younger days.

Perfect venue...posh porta potty is a small price to pay so to speak...

    Things happen beyond our control.
Good luck with what ever choice you make.
I hope it turns out well for you!

I do not envy you! Only you can decide what’s the right way forward. I would be seething, just like you. What is the vibe or suggested attire for your wedding? Which will keep you more true to you vision, castle winery and “executive” portopotties or the ballroom? Are a majority of you guests traveling, or could you try to postpone your date to a time when the usual bathrooms would be functioning? Whatever you decide focus on that and let go of the other options, there’s no benefit in wondering what might have been.

See if they’ll give you a discount and provide a tent covering in the case of rain.
my venue is on a septic system so they require trailer bathrooms for the guests (handicapped, elderly, and immediate family can use the two toilets onsite). This was my only complaint about the venue, but after seeing bathroom trailers and hearing from other brides who used the same venue I have zero regrets.
Long story short, I wouldn’t give up your dream venue due to the bathrooms.

I’m not sure if this is the venue I’m thinking of but my cousin was married there years ago and also had some issues as far as getting AC in the reception pavilion outside

It is black tie optional so needless to say the portable bathrooms don’t fit the aesthetic

Thanks Angela! That’s what I’m thinking too. It’s not about if the potatoes are nice or not.. it’s about what I signed a contract for
