I am planning a large wedding;300-350 people. My family and fiance refuse to cut the guest list down. I cannot afford a lot of the catering packages ($75-150 dollars a plate). I'm looking to bring an outside caterer who can caterer to my guest. The problem I am running into is that most of these venues are not that nice. I'd really like a beautiful wedding venue/ reception. I do not want it just to be some hall. I am open to venues in Dallas, Chicago, and Houston.

***I am not asking to cook the food myself. There are tons of outside caterers that are much more affordable than 75-150 dollars a plate. Also, my wedding budget is 50,000 dollars for everything. I'm looking for helpful advice!!!

I've been actually thinking about this. You have less than a year, (but you are sorta off season, even though Nov. is becoming the new Oct.....). Why don't do an informal poll to see how many of these far flung people are actually on board with traveling halfway across the country to spend four minutes with you? I'm not trying to be mean, but honestly, tradition or not, that is not something I would do. I'm not a fan of ginormous weddings anyway; I'd be more inclined to participate if I knew I'd actually be able to spend some time with a couple that I presumably was close enough with to make the short list instead of being part of a traveling village.

All I'm saying really, is that when the rubber hits the road, you may find out that far less people are actually motivated to be there, not because they don't like you but because a destination wedding is a hassle, no matter where that destination is. I can see your immediate family saying yes to any place, but no one has 350 immediate family members...and again, speaking for myself (the only possibility....) there is no way I'd spend 50, 000 to host so many people I hardly know. And budgets almost always go over.

So get a realistic grip on who what and where, and then start planning, but don't wait too long. It'll be here before you know it.

Hi Doris! I had my wedding in San Antonio and was very close to booking Lost Mission. The weather is still nice in early November so you could utilize both indoor and outdoor space. They provide all china, linens, bar space and services as well as allow outside caterers. San Antonio is far less expensive than Dallas or Houston, so you should get more out of your money. Oh, and they have a chapel onsite or you can have your wedding outdoors. I have provided the link to the venue as well as some catering options:

Spazzy was really sweet to recommend the Rosenburg Skyroom. However, I attended an event there for work and it has a very boardroom feel (it's located on a college campus). Also the views do not include downtown.

Check out caterers in those areas and ask them what facilities (that will hold your guest list) allow them to come in and cater. When my first DD got married we were looking for just exactly that and I just started calling caterers. It all came together when I did that.

Also - you do realize you don't have to deal with your FI and your families stubbornness, right. Tell them if they won't compromise you aren't doing all this planning - but be ready to hold fast to that.

I think Celia gave you some good information to think about in her last post.

Celia has a very real point - you may have a potential guest list for 350 people, but in reality when it comes to DW, you'll get maybe 50% of that actually showing.

I found a place in cypress (outside of houston) that could handle your guest list, but idk if they allow you to outside cater. I think the name is enchanted something. I'll look when I get off work tonight.

@Celia-- I think you are right about calling the guest to see if they would really travel. I might be able to cut the guest count this way. Thanks for the helpful suggestion.

@OriginalKD- Thanks for the lovely places!! I will look into them today.

@Jeleebeenz-- That's actually a really good idea. I haven't spoken to too many caterers directly so this might be a really great way to find a location.

Would you be willing to travel to Amarillo? I noticed you listed some places in Texas. My cousin got married at Destiny's Garden and she brought in her own caterer even though the venue could have provided heavy appetizers. It was a beautiful venue and they pretty much do everything for you.

Doris, It was unclear to me if you were looking for a venue in Texas that allows outside catering or in another locale but this list will be of help. If you are looking for a BYOCatering option in another state just substitute the state name into the URL where you see 'texas' below.

    Good luck.

I would look for non traditional options, for that budget you could get married at The house of Blues or a similar concert venue, we looked into it, you should see some of the awesome options they have for food as well. It was out of our budget but probably workable for yours, also a concert venue could hold well over 300 (depending on the venue).

She said she cannot afford a catered event at the price of $75-150 a person. If you don't have suggestions why criticize this lady? I'm interested to know if you found any places in Houston. I am looking for venues not halls that allow outside catering for about 150-200 guest and no I'm not self catering. I want a place that gives me an option of my own caterer and not necessarily someone on their list.
