It's optional, but I totally recommend it! Often times, photographers will include an engagement shoot in a wedding package. You could use the photos for Save The Dates, holiday cards, etc.

They've become very popular in recent years. We didn't do one and didn't feel like we missed out, but I know plenty of other couples who have.

I agree with the women above. Not only can you see if you like the work, but you can get a feel if you like your photographers in general. I think it's good to have photographers you trust, feel comfortable around, and know they will help guide you to taking the best photos.

I always recommend that people get their engagement shoot done, because it's a great way to experience first-hand. the work your photographer will present to you. The first thing I did before I even started wedding planning, was that I had my engagement shoot, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny. I used my engagement photos for everything: from the wedding website, to the save the dates, even the bridesmaids and groomsmen proposal boxes we gave to our bridal party featured them.

What makes an engagement shoot fun to plan, was that I spent my time choosing what photographer I wanted to hire, what clothes I wanted my fiancee and I to wear, and nothing is more fun than going from place to place trying to find the perfect location to take them in.
